INTRODUCTION.

The value of tombstone records for the purposes of the historian is not yet fully appreciated. Some day, when it is too late, we shall awake to a sense of our neglect. Apart from its intrinsic value, the following record is printed in the hope that others may be led to do likewise.

There are three old cemeteries in Charleston whose origin antedates the nineteenth century, though most of their tombs are modern. These old ceme- teries contain many inscriptions of great historical interest and which throw a valuable side-light upon the early history of the Jews in America. Time has borne heavily on many of these stones, many of their inscriptions being decipherable only with the greatest difficulty. This is due, to some extent, to the old custom of having flat slabg. Several of them I have literally unearthed and many are no longer in existence.

I have thought it well for the sake of completeness to include all three cemeteries in this volume, and I have added such historical data as will make the record complete.

The oldest cemetery at Coming Street is laid out in lows more or less regular. The inscriptions are copied in order and the location of the tombstones is therefore quite easy. I have not followed the in- scriptions line for line, for that would have neces- sitated a much larger volume and, while adding perhaps to its appearance, would not have enhanced its value. My object has been to preserve the record and not to perpetuate the eccentricities of old-time tomb-stones. I would only add that I have several times compared my transcripts with the originals. 1 can assure the reader of the absolute accuracy of each and every one of them.

The cemetery at Coming Street is the oldest Jewish ) cemetery in South Carolina. It was originally pur- chased by Isaac Da Costa, the first Hazan of Beth Elohim, for a private burying place for his own family. "Finding that it would be a convenient place for the Burial Ground of the Jews' Congregation in general," he, "out of regard for the said congregation,

4

became willing and desirous, and did afterwards intend that the same should be conveyed in trust to the con- gregation." Carrying out his original intention, Isaac Da Costa, conveyed this burial ground in 1764, for a consideration of seventy pounds lawful money of the province, in trust to certain trustees“ for a place of burial for the use of the Jews residing in Charles Town or elsewhere within the Province of South Carolina, who do and shall conform to the Jewish rites and ceremonies in general, and who do and shall conform to and observe the rules, orders and regula- tions of the Jews congregation in Charles Town named Beth Eloim."

The following are the trustees mentioned in the deed:

Joshua Hart, Immanuel Cortissos, Joseph Da Costa and Samuel Da Costa, of Charles Town, and mem- bers of the Jews congregation in Charles Town known by the name of Beth Eloim.

Benjamin Mendes Da Costa, Joseph Salvador, Esq., Solomon Da Costa, Moses Franco and Joshua Mendes Da Costa, of the city of London, and members of the 'Portuguese Jews congregation in the said city known by the name of Sahar Ashamaim.

Jacob Lopes Torres, Isaac Mendes Furtado, Benj- amin Dias Fernandes, Isaac Henriquez and Abraham Aguilar, of the Island of Jamaica, and members of the Jews congregation in King's Town in the said Island, known by the name of Sahar Ashamaim.

Isaac Piza, Benjamin Messias, David Castello, David Lindo and Isaac Pinheiro, of the Island of Barbadoes, and members of the Jews congregation in Bridge Town in said Island, by the name of Nidhe Israel.

Jacob Franks, Daniel Gomes, Benjamin Gomes, Isaac Mendes Seixas and Heyman Levy, of the city of New York, and members of the Jews congregation in that city known by the name of Scherit Israel.

Moses Lopes, Moses Levy, Naphtali Hart, Jacob Rods. Rivera and Aaron Lopes, of New Port, Rhode Island, and members of the Jews congregation in the said Island known by the name of Yeshuat Israel.

Benjamin Sheftal, Mordecai Sheftal, Minis Minis, Isaac De Lyon and Levy Sheftal, of the Town of Savannah in the Province of Georgia, and members of the Jews congregation in the said Town of Savan- nah, known by the name of Mikve Israel.

The deed is recorded in the office of Mesne Con- veyance, Vol. C 3, p. 108 sq.

How delightful is the contemplation of the virtues of the departed! And well can we indulge this feeling on reviewing the life of the revered being whose re- mains here repose. She was the virtuous woman, "whose price is above rubies, and whose children rise up and call her blessed," for the precepts of God were in her heart and were made the rule of her conduct through life. Her survivors can truly exclaim in the words of Holy Writ: "Let me die the death of the righteous and may my last end be like hers."
