Who died 15th January, 1811, aged 61 years. During a residence of 20 years in this city, piety and probity marked the course of the deceased. An enlightened mind, highly advantaged by a liberal education rendered him a valuable member of the Hebrew congregation and of several charitable societies, particularly the Hebrew Orphan Society which he was essentially in- strumental in creating and he was honour'd by being unanimously elected its first president.
Patriotic as a citizen, humane as a master and as a father truly affectionate, as a husband the feeling's of a disconsolate widow who erects this tribute to his memory speaks more than can be inscribed on marble.

Sacred to the Memory of MR. ISRAEL JOSEPH,
Who departed this life in the 71st year of his age, on Saturday the 9th of June, 1804. He was a native of Manheim on the Rhine, in Germany and a respectable merchant and resident of South Carolina for upwards of 40 years-during which period he sustained the character of an honest and upright man. At the time of his death and for many years previous to it, he was President of the Hebrew Synagogue in this city. The congregation have reason to deplore in him the loss of a good member and a most generous benefactor.

NOTE.
Adjoining the old cemetery and on a somewhat higher level, is the burial ground of the old Shearith Israel congregation. The introduction of the organ into the new synagogue of Beth Elohim in 1840, divided the congregation into two sections. The orthodox par- ty, having appealed to the law courts in vain, seceded and formed the Shearith Israel congregation. So bitter was the feeling between the two parties, that inter- course between them hardly existed. The seceding section went so far as to purchase their own burial ground. This was walled off from the old cemetery of Beth Elohim. After the re-union of the two congre- gations in 1866, the cemeteries were likewise united and the dividing wall pulled down. The following are the inscriptions in this portion of the ground:

Born Charleston, June 17th, 1834. Died June 15th, 1866. A victim of exposure incidental to a soldier's life. He died a prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio, a few days before the surrender of the Confederacy.

Born in Germany, 1773. Died in Charleston, June 8. 1869.
His long life was greatly due to his remarkable equanimity and amiability.
MARY L. MOSES.
Born 1791. Died at Sumter, S. C., April 15th, 1863. She spent her life in doing good.

Here Lie the Remains of MOSES DAVIS,
A native of Coblentz, Germany, and resident in the United States for fifty years. He departed this life on the 31st December, 1843, aged 84 years.
This monument is erected to his memory by his widow Hannah Davis. Peace be to his soul. Amen.

Relict of Moses Davis, who was called to another and a better world on the 24th Sivan, 5619, corres- ponding with the 26th June, 1850, in the 90th year of her age, after a long life of usefulness, piety and be- nevolence passed in the service of her Maker and in obedience to the faith of her fathers.
