JAMES LOUIS PETIGRU Born at Abbeville May 10th. 1789, Died at Charleston March 9th. 1863. JURIST, ORATOR, STATESMAN, PATRIOT. Future times will hardly know how great a life This simple stone commemorates,- The tradition of his Eloquence, his Wisdom and Wit may fade; But he lived for ends more durable than fame. His eloquence was the protection of the poor and wronged His Learning illuminated the principles of Law- In the admiration of his Peers, In the respect of his People In the affection of his Family, His was the highest place; The just meed Of his kindness and forbearance. His dignity and simplicity His brilliant Genius and his unwearied industry, Unawed by Opinion, Unseduced by Flattery Undismayed by disaster. He confronted Life with antique Courage And Death with Christian Hope.

In the great Civil War He withstood his People for his Country, But his People did homage to the Man Who held his conscience higher than their praise; And his Country Heaped her honours on the grave of the Patriot, To whom, living, His own righteous self-respect sufficed, Alike for Motive and Reward.

In his early grave lie buried Joys and hopes of devoted parents, And just expectations of loving friends. Inspired by a character of uncommon purity and excellence. Faithful to his native State He served her in the field: Upright and earnest In the business of life. He acquired the esteem of men. Cheerful and amiable He won their attachment. Conspicuous among his graces Was that genuine filial love Which in its duties finds its pleasures. The principles Which should govern his conduct, Were sought in the precepts of our holy religion; For in very early youth he had been led to acknowledge before the world Him who is "The way, the Truth, the Life," And through Whom "Death is swallowed up in victory."

Sacred to the Memory of JOHN JULIUS PRINGLE, ESQ. Who died on the 17th. March 1843 In the Ninetieth year of his age. For many years an eminent lawyer In this city, he was not less admired For his knowledge which was various And profound, than for Those qualities of heart and mind Which made it honorably & practically useful. Preferring the calm of retirement To the distinction of public life, He rather shunned than sought office: And was as remarkable for declining, As many are, for courting its honors But the appointments which he did accept Both elevated and responsible, Were discharged with learning, Ability and fidelity. He submitted patiently to the infirmities Of age, and died with the resignation of a Christian.

Illa praemittitur non amittitur.

St. Michael's Churchyard

At the base of this Pilaster Was committed to the earth, All that was mortal and perishable of SUSANNAH, who was forty seven years, The very amiable and excellent wife Of John Julius Pringle Esquire. She was born 14th. December 1768 And died 7th. February 1831. She was liberally endowed, With the qualities of the head, heart, And person, which most adorn and endear The loveliest of her Sex;

These were rendered the more estimable By her discreet, moral and pious conduct, In her life she was therefore much beloved, And at her death much lamented. But her afflicted husband and children "Sorrowed not as those without hope." For they were by this hope consoled. That GOD had willed to translate her, From this frail and fleeting existence To one of everlasting bliss. And that by His grace they may so live Here, as to be reunited to her hereafter.
