To Commemorate the Virtues of MISS ANN F. SIMONTON who died on the 1st. day of Sept. 1828, The South Carolina Society Have erected this Tablet.

Recommendations from the most respectable sources of the high attainments of this lady induced the Trustees of the Academies established by the Society to select her as the Principal of the Female department. Urged by a pious sense of filial duty To contribute to the comfort of an aged mother she sought the responsible office, and in a short time fulfilled the hopes which her reputation had authorised.

To an energy not inconsistent with the character of the softer sex She added an urbanity, which tempered without impairing her discipline. The interesting objects of her care acknowledged the justness of her decisions whilst they were grateful for the mildness with which these were enforced.

Zealous and cheerful in the discharge of her duties, she won the studious application of her admiring pupils, whose innocent tears consecrate the memory of her Virtues, and afford the best illustration of her eminent worth. [F, 4.]
