PRELIMINARY EGOTISM.
In presenting this his first Directory to the citizens of Alexandria, the publisher feels that he has supplied a want long felt by the community -- > complete, General and Business Directory. He has laborel to make it com. plete and perfect in all its details, and if any discrepancies or defects there are, he asks the patient consideration of the public for them; and that they first weigh the many disadvantages he was under in collecting the informa- tion, being a stranger to the citizens, and taking it at a time when many of the residents were out of town recreating from the labors of business: and again following in on the heels of parties who severally attempted and failed in their issue, discredit and distrust was naturally felt for his publication also.
There are 4.233 names in the Directory, which, if the estimate be cor- rect as made by publishers in other cities, would give Alexandria a popula- tion of 16,542, or 4 times the amount of names in the Directory. In conclu- sion, he earnestly thanks all who have assisted him in any way, and prom- ises to renew his efforts to please in future publications.
Very Respectfully, THE PUBLISHER.
REMARKS.
One of the greatest places of interest to the stranger and around which cluster memories dear to the heart of every true Virginian and native Alex- andrian -- is Christ Church. Not alone is this true because its ivy grown walls and weather beaten sides point to a time whose mutations mark the History of our Country, but because Washington. who won for her indepen- dence and placed her First among nations, worshipped and bowed in humble adoration here to Him who made him the humble instrument by which that greatnes, was attained. Though long years have passed since the tomb closed on the great achievements of his life and the interior of the edifice has been remodelled, yet the pew he occupied remains the same. No name to the Virginian is sweeter music, and the deeds of none shine more lustrously than Washington's; but Virginia gave birth, and now guards within ler sacred, bosom one whom her people love to honor, and whose momory is as imperishable as the granite in which his ashes are locked. The memory of Washington and Lee live in the heart of not Virginia alone, but of all peoples. The pew of Lee is also here and is carefully protected and cared for. To the right and left of the chancel are tablets of white marble, bearing on the face of each a cross and crown, with inscriptions to the memory of each. Around the church are buried many of note, and not a stone but bears the indelible imprints of the ingers of time.
Another place of interest to the sight-seeing traveler is the Marstoll House. Here, in the early part of the late civil strife, the proprietor, Jackson, lost his life in attempting to :maintain the right of flying to the breeze, the fing of the cause that he had espoused. He did not yield up his life, however, until he had first shot and kil ed Col. Ellsworth who made the attempt. This was about the first bloodshed of the war. The house has since passed into the hands of Messrs. L. GENZBERGER & SON, who keep one of the most ex- tensive boot and shoe stores in it in the city. Photographs can be had of them.
