Alexandria Library.
Was founded on the 24th day of July, 1794, as a voluntary association, and continued voluntary till 1798, when an Act of Incorporation was obtained from the Legislature of Virginia. In IS61 it contained about 5,000 vols., more than 1,000 of which were de- stroyed or stolen by the Frederal sol- diers who occupied the Library build- ing as a barrack and hospital in years 1861-'62 and '63. Since the re- organization of the company in 1870, there have been gradual addition's to the shelves, and it now contains 4,325 vols.
