The translating of the Rockingham Record, it presented many

difficulties. As is usualin old records, the hand writing is mostly poor. in many entries the ink has faded to such an extent as to make accurate translating well nigh impossible. In other cases the entries have been made with lead pencil, which at this date was almost entirely faded. Many of the pages due to age have broken edges, while others are badly frayed. Many of the names are spelled phonetically, as they sound. There are instances where an effort has been made to trace the original eriting, hich instead of helping has merely increased the difficulties. Many different hand writings aprear in the entries. No systematic order has been followed in making the various enteries, this is especially true of the Comunion and Confirmation enteries. It appears as though the the first rage to appear blank was utilized for making the desired entry. The names as they appear in the translation are spelled exactly as they arrear in the original Record. The genealogist shoul' have no trouble distinguishing the various names as they appear.

The work of transcribing required a great deal of time and in places it was very difficult to translate, due to conditions ar previously stated. *t however was very interesting since practically all the names appearing in the record, are similar to those which are found in the eighteenth cen- tury Church Records of the Pennsylvania Churches. I have in my possession a large number of translations of old Pennsylvania Church Records. The Rockingham Congregation was a Union Church, ramely Lutheran and Reformed. A careful study of the constitution will substantiate this statement. Judring by the names in the Rockingham Record the pioneers of that section mostly came from Eastern Pa.

Being Germans they were either members of the Lutheran or the Reformed Churches. in Pa. practically all of the early Churches were Union Churches.

It is therefore perfectly logical to assume that they set up similar institutions wherever they went. History bears out this assumption. It is possible that the Rockingham pioneers migrated from Pa. shortly after the Revolutionary War. After the war many veterans received land grants from the government, in Virginia as well as in other states. Records show that many took advantage of the offers extended by the government.

In translating the constitution a special effort was made to interpret the thought, implies, as well as the words used in the document. 52 CeUrEL Dr.

Church Constitution and Articles

Since God is a God of order and whereas all Christian order is by him ordained and instituted, surely Christianity without order and dis- cipline cannot exist. Therefore, in all properly conducted congregations and Church affairs this order has been recognized for centuries. It was proclaimed through the preaching of the Gospel and the humble and penitent lives of all believers.

There then also in Rockingham Co., State of Virginia, a Christian Union (verreingte) protestant congregation, the so nomed (called) Ermentrauts Church has been organized and established for years. In order to bind at this time as deacons of thes Christian Congregation, Phillip Ermentraut Senion, Henrich Flauck, Casper Hahn and Heinrich Ermentraut respectively, present the following Constitution and

| articles for their authority to properly direct the congregation as follows.

ARTICLE 1 (Changing the constitution)

No change in the Church order (constiti tion) shall be presented to the Congregation, without prior consent having been given by two thirds of the members of the Congregation. The elders and deacons of this Congregation together with the Pastor or Pastors shall constitute a United council (kirchen rath). They shall hold meetings from time to time, as they may deem necessary to sustain and uphold order and discipline. he deacons shall in all instances be subservient (under) to the elders and chill undertake nothing without their consent.

ARTICLE II

Both Congregations ( jader seite) shall elect the heretofore named officers, elders and deacons by the majority of votes cast by the Congregation. Elders shall be elected to serve for three years and deacons for four years. In case of a vacancy, an elder is to be elected, 'he oldest deacon in service shall be nominated and declared, elected without further consent of the Congregation. The office of deacon shall be filled by one who has not served in that capacity before. He is to be nominated and elected by the Congregation. All elected officers are to be duly inducted into office.

ARTICLE III

(Filling Pastoral Vacancies)

Should this Congregation in the future agree to accept or reject a Pastor (pfarrer) when three or four members are satisfied with a recommended or an unrecommended Preacher, he shall be invited to preach onee, twice or more times, to this Congregation. lle must present his Certificate of Ordination and other credentials. They may be from this country or from Germany. If he is culy accepted by the Congregation, he shall remain and serve for one Year.

ARTICLE IV (Concerning Rumors)

Whenever rumors are circulated, concerning the Paster, members, elders, deacons or schoolmaster, an annofinced trial shall be held which sh Il be presided over by the elders and deacons. They shall investigate the rumors.

ARTICLE VI

(Only the latter part of this article is available) All who are fuly confirmed shall be received as members. They are bound to attend every regular Communion Service without fail, Preparatory and other services and live a consistant Christian life. ARTICLE VII

In case of a vacancy in any of the two denominations (religionen) No other Pastor shall have the right to Confirm, to conduct Communion services or to perform any ministerial duties. Neither is anyone permitted to preach a trial sermon. However, arrangements shall and may be made whereby applicants may be heard. Permission, however, can only be granted through and by consent of the elders and deacons. ARTICLE VIII

Wvery young mon Confirmed shell subscribe to and conform to this Constitution in order to enjoy all the rights and priveleges of Regular Members. 2.

ARTICLE IX.

If this constitution is sustained and accepted by two thirds of the members of the Congregation, it shall be regarded as the accepted Constitution and so entered into the Church Book (Record) It is to be read annually and to each one confirmed. It is to be earnestly observed . ARTICLE X

In case of erring brethren they shall adjust all differenced according to Matthew 18, verses 15-16-17
