The old Dutch Church.
Bradition says that this old church wich was known by four different names viz; "Saint Ph llips", Trinity, "Ermentrouts", or the "old Dutch XXXX Church", was located several miles north of Keezletom on the"Mountain" road, the site of the present U. B. Church "Bethel". It appears that the membership of this Church prior to the year 1800 attended the Old "Peaked Mountain Church" at "eCaheysville, but the distance from this section to McGaheysville was from five to seven miles by way of the bridle path across the mountain and from ten to twelve miles by the road leading around the end of the Peaked Mountain. About the year 1787 steps were taken to erect a house of worship, the Ermentrout families of the neighborhood taking an active part in it's construction. Accordingly logs were hewn and the work of building begun. When the wall had reached a heighth of ten or twelve feet, a log that was being placed in position slipped and fell, killing George Ermentrout instantly. le and his father had taken anactive part in the enterprise but this tragedy had the effect of stopping the work and nothing more was done until the year 1806, when the work was completed. The log that caused the tragedy was placed in the wall to the rear of the pulpit and was marked by a number of crosses.
Then the church wastorn down some years ago, to be replaced hy - more modern structure, (Trinity) located on the old Keezletown food), the logs were used in building a barn on the farm of the late Madison Wise, now known i's "Wiseland" and owned by his daughter, Ollie Wise Miller, and her husband, G. Luther Miller. The bridle path referred to above as used by Mr. Niller's grandfather in going to and from school at McCaheysville. The children now ride in buses that ston at their front door in the morning and return them in the evening to the sare point. October 1936
