DANIEL BOONE TRAIL RESTAURANT

By PHYLLIS & ARDELL PETERSON

As we came to the intersection of Hwy 646 & Hwy 58 in Duffield, there was a Restaurant there. We stopped in, and found they had a placemat they used, that had DANIEL BOONE's Trial mapped on it along with the following:

"On September 25, 1773 BOONE, his wife, eight children and five other families left North Carolina, for the first of his expeditions into Kentucky with settlers.

On October 9, the party passed either where this restaurant now sits, or just a few feet away. That night they camped about four miles from this restaurant location. They were attacked by Shawnee Indians just before sunrise, several were killed, including BOONE's oldest son, JAMES.

This expedition ended at the massacre site, and returned back to North Carolina. A state historical marker on Route 58, west of here has information about the ambush and the death of BOONE's son and others.

There is a marker 200 feet north of this restaurant placed by the Ruritan Club, devoting this as the trial used by DANIEL BOONE on his way to Kentucky.

In the spring of the following year, BOONE returned here to his son's grave and was nearly captured by the Indians.

This trail was used by BOONE and other settlers for many trips for years in settling Kentucky.

This great American died in Missouri in 1820 at the age of 86."
