HURD CEMETERY - Clinchport #94

This cemetery is listed in Volume I. This is where the PETERS CEMETERY

was moved to. Here is two letters concerning the remains that was moved.

From the DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS, COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA Richmond, Va. Route 23, Proj. 0023-084-110, RW-202, Scott County. December 1 1965

Mr. BUD PETERS, Route #2 - Box 219, Jonesville, Va. Dear Mr. PETERS:

This is to advise that State Highway Route No. 23 is to be improved to a four lane divided highway. The proposed right of way will take all of the graves in the old cemetery on the lands of the J. H. FRAZIER ESTATE.

It is proposed to have a licensed undertaker move these graves to another location, which is unknown at present time. A Court Order is to be secured for the removal, but the Court as well as this Department would like to have the advise and approval of the closest relatives. We have been in contact with MR. BEN PETERS, MRS. ALMEDA TAYLOR, MR. AUDLEY PETERS, MRS ELLA PETERS and others and they have given their permission to the removal of said graves.

All expenses of moving the graves are to be borne by the Department of Highways.

It has been noted that you are a grandson of MR. GEORGE PETERS, MRS. BETSY PETERS and a nephew of JIMMY PETERS and ELIZA PETERS who are buried in the FRAZIER CEMETERY. In the relocation of the graves, they will be reburied as nearly in the same order as they are now, so far as is practicable.

I will be appreciated if you will write us a letter under your signature giving your approval of the proposed transaction. The Court as well as this Department wishes to know the reaction of all the next of kin of the deceased persons to be moved. Also if there is any additional information as to others who might be buried in the cemetery but not marked as such, please advise us. Thanking you for your cooperation in this matter, I am,

Very Truly yours, JAMES A. ICENHOUR Highway Right of Way Agent

From the same address as above.

Mr. HAROLD B. PETERS, RFD 4 - Box 219, Jonesville, Va 24263 Dear Mr. PETERS:

Your letter of April 27, 1980 has been referred to me by our Central Office

in Richmond for answering. You requested information as to the removal of the remains of the PETERS family.

The remains of bodies found in this cemetery were moved to the property of MRS. EMMA R. HURD of RFD 1, Gate City, Virginia. The burial site is in a family cemetery presently called the HURD CEMETERY but was formerly known as the PIERSON CEMETERY, which is located a short distance north of a service road along the north side of Route 23 west of Gate City. They were moved and reintered by the Warren Funeral Home, Mr. EARL B. WARREN, Funeral Director, in May 1966.

Very truly yours, W. M. WILLIAMS, District Right of Way Manager

cc: MR. S. A. WAYMACK

MR. HAROLD B. PETERS knows of four of the 13 buried there. They are as follows : GEORGE PETERS born around 1809 (1850 Scott Co, Va Census) ELIZABETH PEARSON/PIERSON PETERS born around 1809 (1850 Scott Co, Va Census)

JAMES A. (JIMMY) PETERS born around 1840 (1850 Scott Co, Va Census) ELIZA J. PETERS born around 1840 (1850 Scott Co, Va Census) These are buried in the south-east corner of the cemetery.
