INTRODUCTION. . 7

"Catalogue of the Principal Officers of Vermont, as connected with its Political History, from 1778 to 1851, with some Biographical Notices, etc. By Leonard Deming, Middlebury, Vt." The foregoing book appeared in 1851, being published by the author. The next year a supplement was printed, containing the officers of 1852. This supplement was bound with the original volume, and most extant copies contain the two.

In 1912, the General Assembly directed the Secretary of State to cause to be prepared a revision of Deming's book, which should "conform to the original work, and contain data to and including the time of its publication." The present volume is the outcome of this enactment.

The direction that the revision should "conform to the original work" has been broadly interpreted. The arrangement of the lists of officers has been changed with a view to ease of reference. The gazetteer feature has been curtailed, since "Hemenway's Gazetteer" has covered the ground much more thoroughly for the whole state (except Windsor County.) But the chief innovation has been the addition of dates of birth and death, and in securing these a great part of the work of the revision has been expended.

The sources of these dates have been many. Deaths in the state since Jan. 1, 1857, are on record in the town clerks' offices, but very few death records of earlier years are to be found there. For earlier dates, cemeteries and family records have been largely consulted. Town histories and genea- logies have contributed much information. Many correspondents throughout the state have interested themselves in research for men of their own localities, and their aid has been invaluable. In a few towns no such aid could be obtained, and deficiencies in the record of these towns are very manifest. The difficulties in tracing the earlier names on the lists are greater than would have been believed. For many of the "rude forefathers" there are no headstones to be found, either from original lack or from decay. Emigration from Vermont set in very early, and a large proportion of the prominent men of the earlier time ended their days outside the state. Many of these cannot be traced. To illustrate: of the first nine men on the representative list of the town of the editor's residence only two died in that town and but one other in the state.

A by-product of the search for dates of birth and death has been the correction of not a few errors in the names as given in the earlier lists. Some such doubtless still remain uncorrected. An addition to the original work is the Index of Names. A dash (-) after a name indicates its previous appearance in the same list. The dates are given only on the first appearance of the name. It is intended to give the residence in each case as it was at the beginning of the term of office.

It is needless to say that no attempt has been made to preserve the peculiar flavor which renders Deming's book one of the "curiosities of literature". In that respect the original edition can never be superseded.
