Returned to Vergennes in 1867 and en- gaged in the manufacture of furniture; inventor of the rotary sandpapering ma- chine and door planer now in general use; employed as commercial traveler since 1882. In February, 1849, sailed in brig Acadian for California; returned via the isthmus, and went out again same year, making the then record trip New York to San Francisco of 24 days and six hours. Lindsey of Newbury; they have five children, Alice L. (Mrs. Blake), Wil- liam W., of Hartford, Conn., B. L., Merty S .. and Adna M., of Hartford, Conn. En- gaged in farming three years; commer- cial traveler for L. K. Quinby & Co. seven years; in 1878 went on the road for him- self selling general merchandise at retail, which he followed for many years; in 1891, in company with George & Gay, purchased the store of J. B. Darling; in 1904 bought out his partners, later selling half interest to Charles E. F. From age of 11 to 19 years worked in lumber mills in Burlington; worked on Burlington and Lamoille railroad one year; engaged in cigar business. TIERNEY, JAMES HENRY, Roxbury. Fish culturist. Born Ripton, March 7, 1884; son of James Edward and Lurinda (Russell) Tierney. Educated in the pub- lic schools. In 1909 married Mabel Ger- trude Tracy of Randolph. Has been employed at the Vermont State Hatchery at Roxbury, the past three years being in charge. A Democrat. Member of the Roman Catholic Church; and the Modern Woodmen of America.


TILDEN, GEORGE A., Roxbury. Mer- chant. Born Roxbury, May 18, 1855; son of Ai and Betsey Ann Tilden. Educated in the public schools. In 1885 married Ida M. White of Northfield; they have two sons, Harry White and Frederick Billings. Has conducted a general mer- chandise store for many years. Member of Vermont National Guard 1877 to 1884. Is a Democrat; represented Roxbury in the Legislature 1898 and 1904; town treasurer for 10 years; has held other town offices. In religious belief a Univer- salist.


TINKHAM, H. C., Burlington. Phy- sician and surgeon. Born Brownington, Dec. 7, 1856; son of Samuel S. and Clar- issy (Richmond) Tinkham. Educated in the public schools of Brownington; Derby Academy; and graduated in medi- cine University of Vermont 1883. In 1886 married Clara E. Day of Coventry, who died in 1896; they had two children, Mabel A. and Harold Day (deceased). Has practiced medicine and surgery in Burlington since 1883; dean of the medi- cal faculty of the University of Vermont. A Republican; school commissioner. Bur- lington eight years; chairman of the board four years. A Congregationalist. Member of Vermont State Medical So- ciety, and American Medical Association.


TITCOMB, JOHN WHEELOCK, Lyndon. Farmer and fish culturist. Born Farm- ington, N. H .. Feb. 21, 1860; son of George Alfred and Mary (Lemist) Tit- comb. Educated at Phillips Exeter Acad- emy; passed examinations to Harvard but did not matriculate. In 1899 married Martha. daughter of Hon. Jonathan Ross of St. Johnsbury; they have two children, Elizabeth, and Jonathan Ross. Assistant superintendent Howe Scale Co. 1890-3; State fish and game commissioner 1891-
