VEZINA, LOUIS ALBERT, Vergennes. Clergyman. Born Danville, P. Q., Dec. 13. 1875; son of Regis and Zoe (Lefran- cois) Vezina, who moved to Salem, Mass., 1878, and Fall River, Mass., 1879. Edu- cated in parochial schools, Fall River; in 1889 entered college at Quebec, P. Q., graduating 1895; entered seminary con- nected with Laval University, and after four years' study of theology, was or- dained a priest by the archbishop of Que- bec in the cathedral of that city, Feb. 18, 1900. March, 1900, appointed pastor at Norton Mills, with missions at Wallace Pond and Bloomfield; July, 1901, organ- ized parish in Shoreham, where many im- provements were added to church prop- erty; in January, 1907, promoted to the important parish of Vergennes, where in four years of pastorate the congregation has increased from 600 to 1,000 and the revenue doubled. Has taken an active part in city affairs; was president Ver- gennes Champlain tercentenary organiza-


tion; influential in organizing board of trade, and its president since 1909. Brown of Brattleboro; they have two chil- dren, Beatrice Emma and William How- ard. Was clerk in grocery store for a few years ; in 1882 entered the paper mill of his grandfather at Brattleboro, with a view of becoming thoroughly acquainted with the business; in 1891 became asso- ciated with his father in same business under firm name of Wm. WAITE, HERSCHEL NAPOLEON, John- son. Physician and surgeon. Born Stowe, Feb. 13, 1850; son of Daniel and Aliphal (Briggs) Waite. On his mother's side a descendent of Ephraim Briggs, who fought at Lexington and served in the Con- tinental Army during the war for Ameri- can independence and died at Barnard in 1829. Educated at Stowe High School; Bryant & Stratton's Business College, Burlington; the Eclectic Medical Col- lege, New York City; and Post Graduate Medical School and Hospital. In 1879


married Addic M. Benson of Stowe; she died in 1892; they had two daughters, Alice Angie and Grace M. In 1893 mar- ried Mrs. Laura J. Copeland of Johnson. Dr. Waite began life as a salesman in Jacksonville, Ill., and St. Louis, Mo., in 1870-1; studying medicine and attending lectures in 1873-5, in Louisville, Ky., where he was licensed to practice his pro- fession. Later, for four years served as expert accountant in New York City, and in -1880 engaged in mercantile business in Clarion, Ia., continuing one year, when he returned to New York and took a course of medical lectures and graduated with high honors from the Eclectic Medieal Col- lege in 1882. Here he practiced medicine until 1889, taking post graduate courses meanwhile, when he returned to Stowe, finally settling in Johnson, where he has since continued to practice successfully. In 1882 established in New York the Yorkville and Harlem Free Dispensary for the poorer classes and for clinical in- struction for eclectic physicians. Is a member Eclectic Medical Society, City and County of New York ; life member Eclectic Medical Society, City and State of New York; member Clinical Society, New York Post Graduate Medical School and Hos- pital; New York Academy of Veterinary Science and Comparative Pathology; the Medico-Legal Society of New York City; National Eclectic Medical Association ; American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, of which he was the Vermont vice president; Connecticut Eclectic Med- ical Association; American Medical and Surgical Society of Ohio; Vermont State Eclectic Medical Society, and its president 1892-6. In 1885 received honorary de- gree of doctor of medicine from the Eclec- tic Medical College of Cincinnati; and a year later became the executive member of the University of Medicine and the Ameri- can Medical College of Indianapolis. Ind .. for the state of Vermont, from which in- stitution he received the degree of doctor of medicine ad eundem. At Montpelier, in June. 1895, he organized the New Eng- land Eclectic Medical Association. being chosen Ist vice president and secretary. a year later becoming its president, and under his guidance it was incorporated. Educated at People's Academy, Morris- ville, class of 1877, and University of Vermont, 1881. Married Lettie A. Spaul- ding of Morristown; they have two chil- dren. Harold P. and Lilah F. Left Uni- versity of Vermont at end of sophomore year on account of ill health; from that time until 1886 was occupied in farming and teaching school; was principal of high school, Enosburg Falls, two years. Ap- pointed county clerk of Lamoille County March 27, 1886, which office he has held since; was register of probate for three years under Hon. R. S. Page; was con- stable and collector of taxes, Hyde Park, for eight years; justice of the peace for six years; a member of the state Repub- lican committee since 1900; represented Hyde Park in the Legislature 1904. Blood of North Benning- ton; they have seven children, Fannie ( Mrs. H. C. Harmon), Florence, Edith I. (Mrs. Roy M. Paddock), Mary (Mrs. I'ritz Armstrong), Edna, Henry, and Har- riett. Learned trade of wheelwright with his father at North Bennington 1860-6; then began manufacture of carriages; in 1883. in partnership with Emory S. Har- ris. engaged in furniture and undertaking


business in Bennington, continuing 10 years; since then has conducted the busi- ness alone. Lives on the original Wal- bridge homestead at Bennington Falls, be- ing the fifth generation to own it. Is in- dependent in politics; trustee of Benning- ton graded school. Member of Masonic fraternity, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and Forest- ers of America.


WALKER, DANIEL CHASE, Cambridge. Farmer. Born Cambridge, Dec. 11, 1841; son of Lyman and Adeline (Chase) Walker. Educated in the public schools and Bakersfield Academy. In 1867 mar- ried Kate Matilda Converse of Bakersfield. Mr. Walker followed the carpenter's trade for a few years; has always lived on the farm which his grandfather, William Walker of Brookfield, cleared in 1800; has been engaged in settling estates for about 20 years. Has collected a choice library of about a thousand volumes. During the Civil War enlisted as private in Co. D, 1st Vermont Cavalry; was in the numerous engagements in which his regiment took part. Is a Republican; represented Cam- bridge in the Legislature 1892. Has held nearly all the town offices ; was postmaster at North Cambridge 20 years ; in 1906 was elected assistant judge of Lamoille County, and has been twice re-elected, still hold- ing the office. Is past commander of Post No. 10, G. A. R., of Cambridge.


WALKER, FRANK ARDEN, Barre. Ar- chitect and civil engineer. Born Wil- liamstown in September, 1864; son of Enos F. and Laura (Davenport) Walker. Educated common schools, Barre Acad- emy and Vermont Academy. In 1892 married Rose Freeman Kempton of New- ton Mass .; they have two children, Faith and Freeman Kempton. Judge Walker. is a farmer to the manor born, liv- ing in the homestead which has sheltered four generations of his race. Is a Repub- lican; has served his town in various elec- tive offices, being at present prosecuting agent and justice of the peace; repre- sented Bridport in the Legislature 1884; assistant judge of Addison County 1896- 8; senator from Addison County 1896. WALKER, HENRY WILLARD, South Woodstock. Farmer. Born Rockingham, May 6, 1833; son of Henry and Eliza (Willard) Walker. Educated in the pub- lic schools and Green Mountain Institute. In 1855 married Aurora L. Ralph of Reading; they have one daughter, Carrie Aurora (Mrs. R. E. Jaquith). Early in life began the breeding of Merino sheep, later going into dairying, and continuing until 1905, when he sold his farm and moved to South Woodstock village, where he has since been a resident; had state reputation for manufacturing maple sugar and syrup. Is president of Green Moun- tain Perkins Academy, and chairman of its executive committee for many years; town school director six years; trustee and member board of investment Ottau- quechee Savings Bank of Woodstock. Is a Republican; represented Woodstock in the Legislature 1896; senator from Wind- sor County 1900; has been justice of the peace 40 years; lister for many years. A Universalist, chairman of executive board of Woodstock for many years. Master of Orion Grange, Patrons of Husbandry, South Woodstock, several terms.

Gilman of Andover, N. H .; they have two children, John G. and Olive B. After leaving school studied medicine with Dr. J. P. Weeks of Danville and Dr. M. G. Hough- ton of St. Johnsbury; took up veterinary study under Dr. Geo. H. Dadd of Brighton. In March, 1891, commissioned veterinary inspector of the Bureau of Animal Industry, Department of Agricul- ture, for the district of Memphremagog. An active admirer of the Morgan horse; has done more to perpetuate that valuable family of horses than any other person now living in northern Vermont, having owned over 20 stallions more or less en- dowed with Morgan blood, several of which attained noted distinction as sires; at the present time owns three promising stal- lions, possessing Morgan blood and show- ing the characteristics of that family. WARREN, CHARLES CARLTON, Water- bury. Leather manufacturer. Born Hartland, Feb. 11, 1843; son of Charles W. and Julia M. (Perry) Warren. Edu- cated at Hartland High School and Kim- ball Union Academy. In 1873 married Ellen F. McElroy of Middlesex; they have two children, Charles C., Jr., and Katie Grace. Learned the trade of a tanner of his father in Hartland, and while there was leader in the Hartland cornet band; in 1870 moved to Water- bury and was engaged in the business of tanning leather for twenty-five years, when tannery burned, during which time was leader of the Waterbury brass band; in 1900 established the Warren Leather Co. at Morrisville, becoming its president, holding this office to date; was state fish and game commissioner, erect- ing the state hatchery at Roxbury, and started the breeding of trout for Ver- mont streams and ponds. Was second leader Vermont Brigade Band, organized at Burlington, and served as such leader from its organization until the close of the Civil War, two and one-half years. Is a Republican; member of Winooski Lodge No. 49, F. & A. M .; Royal Arch Chapter. Knights Templar, and Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.

of Vermont; studied medicine with Prof. H. D. Holton of Brattleboro; graduated from University of Vermont Medical Col- lege, class of 1879. In 1880 married Or- cenia B. Foss of North Hyde Park; she died 1898; they had one daughter, Agnes MI. Began the practice of medicine in Wolcott 1879; removed to Cabot in 1880, where he has since been in active practice. Is a Republican ; represented Cabot in the Legislature 1900; has been a member of the U. S. pension examining board, Mont- pelier, since 1889, with the exception of the four years of Cleveland's second adminis- tration. An attendant of the Congrega- tional Church. Past master of Green Mountain Lodge No. 68, F. & A. M .; dis- trict deputy two years; member of the Eastern Star; King Solomon Chapter. No. 7. R. A. M .; Mt. Zion Commandery, No. 9, K. T., at Montpelier; and Mt. Sinai Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine.
