The principal anniversary celebration of the year is at Brattleboro, where July 5 the hundredth anniversary of the church was observed, the program including a pageant, the dedication of a marker on the original site of the house of worship, and a communion service held exactly 100 years from the first communion. A unique commemoration at Waitsfield was of the fiftieth anniversary of the appointment of two deacons, both still in office.
Another federation of a strong church with a neighboring church of less strength has been effected,-that of Rutland and Clarendon. The federations of this type are sound in theory and appear to be working well in practice. To the federations with churches of other denominations are to be added a union at Cambridge with the Methodist church, which has just com- pleted a successful year, and one with the Baptists at Essex, which has recently been formally arranged. The union with the Methodists at Waterville is a more informal one, consist- ing of a general agreement to unite in the support of preach- ing by a resident minister in the union meeting house, and

VERMONT CONGREGATIONAL CONFERENCE
has resulted in the first additions for ten years to our church, which has been considered nearly extinct.
Not much has been reported in the way of formal evange- listic effort. Rev. Thomas Hall, after holding evangelistic services at Duxbury and Barnet, returned for a time to the regular work of a pastor. A visit of a deputation of the Dart- mouth Christian Association to Wells River in February made a telling appeal to the young people, which should bear fruit. At Royalton, the pastor obtained outside help for a series of meetings in September and October. Union meetings were held at Waterville under an evangelist, and at Williamstown with the aid of neighboring pastors. Pastoral evangelism seems to be the note of the day, and the additions to many churches at the recent communions are good evidence of the value of such work. The visit of most of our pastors and many of our lay workers to Boston during the Sunday campaign should have stimulated this effort. Among churches receiving a noteworthy number of additions by confession since January 1st are Rutland, Burlington First, Montpelier, Wells River, Swanton, St. Johnsbury Center and South, Dux- bury, Wallingford, Williamstown, Danville, Whiting, South Hero, West Brattleboro, and Brattleboro Swedish.
A series of Tercentenary conferences in October and November at ten points in the state, conducted by officers of the National Council, were well attended in almost every in- stance, few churches failing of representation at some meet- ing, and proved helpful for suggestion and inspiration. An Every Church Visitation Campaign in the interest of the Ter- centenary program was partly carried through in December, circumstances not making it possible in all sections of the state.
There are some unclassified items of interest. At Ver- gennes, a Bausch and Lamb Balopticon has been purchased and installed, Jamaica has a vested choir of boys. A Junior Church League at Corinth has largely increased attendance at public worship. It is to be expected that at this time the national colors should have a place of honor in our houses of worship as in all public places. Among instances of this which have come to notice are the raising of money at Jericho Second for the purchase of a flag, the presentation to the church at Essex Junction of a flag by a newly organized troop

of Boy Scouts, and at Rutland by the Knights of King Arthur and the Men's Club. At Winooski, there is a strong emphasis on the Boy Scout and Camp Fire organizations, the members coming from the Catholic as well as from all Protestant churches. Classes in "Pilgrim Deeds and Duties" are report- ed at Milton and Chelsea, and doubtless there are other such. The Every Member Canvass is being increasingly employed, with gratifying results. Weekly cottage prayer meetings at Stowe in union with the Methodists have aroused much interest in both churches. The publication of a volume of sermons on the theme "What is Salvation?" preached by a group of neighboring ministers in the Brandon pulpit attests the high quality of the sermon work which is being done in the state. The First church of Burlington reports special interest in religious matters among the students of the University, as shown by growing attendance at public worship and at church school, and in additions to the church. At Pittsford, the pew owners have signed an agreement to surrender their legal rights in their pews to the society on condition that they may retain the right to use them during their life time. This makes free pews a possibility in the future. At Essex Junction, the development of an orchestra of twelve pieces and a large chorus has brought out a large attendance on Sunday evening. The new parish house of this church is in the unique situation of paying its own running expenses.
So much for the year past. What of the year to come? This is no time for easy optimism or smug complacency. Serious times are upon us. Lovers of peace as all followers of Jesus must be, we have, and we need have, no misgivings as to the justice of the struggle in which the nation has en- gaged, the outcome of which must be a new freedom for the world or a new triumph for tyranny and barbarism. Like the great German whom we count among our spiritual forbears, "God help us; we can do no otherwise." Vermont has never raised her boys to be slackers, and our churches will have their full share in the great conflict. It will not be easy to main- tain our work, but it must be maintained. May the time of stress be also one of spiritual victories !
