EL PASO, TEXAS.

El Paso has all that is desirable in the matter of climate, with an average of only 36 cloudy days a year, a low average rainfall and a consequential slight humidity. The climate of this city offers great relief to suffers from pulmonary and nervous disorders. El Paso's altitude, 3,767 feet, coupled with the extreme dryness of the atmosphere gives this city unequalled advantage for health and comfort all the year round. El Paso winters are short and dry, always sunny and the thermometer seldom goes below 20 on winter nights. Sun stroke and heat prostrations are unknown in the sum- mer.

The name "El Paso," Spanish for "The Pass' 'topographically expresses its location at the point where the Great Continental Divide has been eroded through by centuries of efforts on the part of the Rio Grande. Harnessed by the ten million dollar Elephant Butte Reclamation Project, the Rio Grande irrigates a valley contiguous to El Paso of 150 miles, with varying width, enabling intense set- tlement in cultivation of rich lands that once were desert wastes.

El Paso is the gateway city of a rich region stretching in every direction 500 miles, and even farther into the Republic of Mexico, which is again being reopened to American capital and energy. Rich in mines, timber, livestock and agriculture, this great region pours its millions annually into El Paso, its metropolitan market place.

El Paso is the largest social, educational and commercial center between Dallas or San Antonio, Texas, and the Pacific coast cities. It has a population of nearly 100,000, considering the suburbs and Fort Bliss. This military post is the principal cavalry post of the United States Army today, with a soldier population of about 6,000. The carnivals and drills of the troops form one of the greatest attractions for the visitor in El Paso.

Whether one travels by rail or auto in entering or leaving El Paso, fertile fields throughout the Rio Grande Valley, green with alfalfa, or with white-dotted verdue of the long staple cotton plant. or with orchards producing neatly every fruit but the citrus, make one oblivious or forgetful of the but slightly distant desert or barren moutain. Even the great desert stretches has their peculiar beauty and charm and situated here and there along the highways are great stock ranches and mines which are the foundation of the wealth of the whole Great Southwest.

In El Paso the churches, schools, factories, banks and extensive . wholesale and retail establishments equal in number and worth those of the metropolitan cities of the Eastern, Northern and Middle West- ern States. A prosperous people support El Paso, and are supported by its interests. maintaining ample amusement and culture for a city confidentially expected to grow to 250,000 souls within the next decade.

Juarez, just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, is a Mecca for tourists stopping over for a day, or entering the Republic for tours. It is the only distinctly foreign city reached in a few minutes from an American city for a street car fare. Here the traveler may pass from the civilization of the Twentieth to that of the Sixteenth
