PARKS AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS.

Capitol Park is an unending source of interest to visitors. All trees, flowers and shrubs, indigenous to this part of the country are found in this Park. Other play grounds and parks are: East Lake Park, Federal Park, Court House Park, City Hall Plaza, Riverside Park and Woodlawn Park.

SCHOOLS.

Sixteen Grade Schools and a High School Group of nine buildings, furnish educational ad- vantages second to none. A Junior College is maintained in connection with the High School.

SALT RIVER VALLEY.

Phoenix is located in the approximate center of the Salt River Valley. This valley comprises more than 700 acres of irrigable land, nearly half of which is now under irrigation. About two thirds of the irrigated land in the Salt River Valley is under the Salt River Project, the water for which is derived from the reservoir formed by the Roosevelt Dam. This is one of the largest irrigation projects in the world, and was built by the United States Government at a cost of $12,000,000.00. The soil is very productive. Six to eight crops of alfalfa are raised in a season. A crop of grain and a crop of corn or grain sorghum are raised on the same land in the same season.

Long Staple cotton is grown in the Salt River Valley more successfully than in any other part of the United States. This cotton, which is known as Pima, is used for the fabric of automobile tires, for fine knit goods and for many other purposes where length of fibre and great strength is important.

Oranges, grape fruit, dates, and almost all varieties of deciduous fruits do splendidly. A

twelve months' growing season is one of the special advantages of farmers in the Salt River Valley.

CLIMATE.

Few places in the world can boast of a climate that equals that of the Salt River Valley. During nine months of the year the weather is delightful. The summers are warm, but it is a dry heat, and not to be judged by temperature records, as one does not feel the high temperature as in a humid climate. . The winter season is delightful-like Spring and Fall in the more northern states.

In the Salt River Valley, Arizona, Nature has assembled all the requirements for rebuilding health and renewing energy. Here are dry air, sunshine, proper altitude, nourishment, pleasant surround- ings. Here has Nature perfected a mild and balmy climate with an even temperature and at an altitude of only 1,100 feet, with a dryness of atmosphere equalled by few localities and excelled by none ohter in the world. The Salt River Valley is protected from all cold winds by high mountain ranges to the North and East, with the Sierra Nevada and Coast ranges to the West. From the South the Valley receives a sufficient shelter from a short spur of low-lying hills. The Gulf of California, though distant about one hundred or so miles to the South and West, exerts a beneficial influence through its prevailing warm winds and ocean cur- rents. Here is a locality with tropical advantages with none of the disadvantages, humidity and malaria, which are usually associated with tropical countries.

We estimate the population at the present time to be 40,000. Ceusus figures gave 29,053. Our check on this at the time indicated at least 35,000 and Phoenix has grown considerably since then, so we believe 40,000 is a conservative estimate.
