NOGALES.
The live city, county seat of Santa Cruz county, and the com- mercial center of a rich region. Nogales is practically a single town but there exists a dual municipality, one in Arizona, the other in Sonora, Mexico, a wide street through the middle of which runs the international boundary separating them. The total population of the two towns is about 12,000, 5,500 on Arizona side; 6,500 on Mexican side. The trade of the two towns comes from rich min- ing regions in northern Sonora and southern Arizona, which are steadily developing. Nogales, Sonora, is the seat of the federal court of the Republic of Mexico and the headquarters of an exten- sive customs collecting district. It is also the headquarters of an American consular district. Nogales, Arizona, is the headquarters port of entry for the United States customs collection district of Arizona.
The Mexican-American trade handled thru this border city averages $24.000.000 annually. The bank resources total over - $5,000,000. More imports and exports from and to Mexico go thru - this port-of-entry than thru all other border points combined.
"Nogales is the center of the world's garbanzo market, over six million dollars worth of this product being handled annually through the warehouses at this point. The reconstruction and development of the wonderful West Coast of Mexico, the trade territory of Nogales, now under way, promises to make this city one of the jobbing centers of the southwest.
The town has five churches; two fine graded public school buildings, a modern high school. a foundry and machine shop. a large cigar factory which ships its products far and wide. The city is lighted by electricity and gives the two public utility plants fran- chises for furnishing electricity, both companies having modern power plants and both manufacturing ice and the one gas. Five hotels, three banks, four newspapers, two daily and two weekly. Several large commercial houses conduct extensive jobbing busi- ness, and the place is also headquarters for several mining com- panies operating in the surrounding district. Adjacent to Nogale- are rich agricultural districts into which within the past four years have come several hundred farmers who are fast developing Santa Cruz county into one of the finest agricultural counties in the state. these districts being known as the Santa Cruz Valley, the San Rafael Valley and the Sonita-Elgin district. The cattle industry is one of the most important as the rattle ranges around Nogales are the best in Arizona. Nogales prides itself on the excellence of It- climate and pure water. A military cantonment with modern ba- hospital etc., is located here. Population 12.000. Altitude 3.86 . feet. ¿ 4 ...
