ARIZONA. 1

ARIZONA has for its sister States and Territories, Utah on the north, New Mexico on the east, Sonora of Old Mexico on the south, California and Nevada on the west. Its area is as much as all of the New England States put together, and two or three times as large as almost any one of the Western States.

Of all the Territories of the United States there are none that are exciting more interest than Arizona. Although it has been known for many years that her mountains are teeming with minerals, very few have had the courage to face the trials of a settlement there. Her remoteness from commercial centers, and the expense attached to the transportation of articles of use, have always been an obstacle to her development. Since the advent of the S. P. Co.'s road, and the A. & P., however, a flow of the tide of immigration has set in toward the new El Dorado. The railroads certainly are entitled to the credit of civilizing this dependency, and to their presence alone a development of her re- sources is attributable. The time is not far distant, we predict, when her claims to Statehood will be recognized, for very soon she will be the possessor of a population that will entitle her to admission to the Union. Already experiments have proven that the production of cereals can be most profitably engaged in, while the nutritious grasses of luxuriant growth on her grazing lands af- ford an argument incontrovertible as to the feasibility of stock- raising.

There is in many quarters of the Territory an abundance of fine timber, and in the manufacture of lumber to supply the heavy demand for building purposes an army of men is engaged. If a diversity of resources such as Arizona is fast becoming noted for can contribute to a rapid and permanent growth, then her near future will be crowned with that glory. Her destiny will place her in the front rank of the prosperous States.

Prescott is the capital. The laws of the Territory are similar to California. Arizona lies between latitude 31° and 37º north, and longitude 109° and 114° 40' west; 67,098,366 of its 72,906,- 240 acres are unsurveyed. The part lying north of the Gila was acquired by the treaty with Mexico. Arizona became a Terri- tory in 1863, prior to which time it was part of New Mexico. It is divided into ten counties. Mountain ranges are numerous, hav- ing a northwest and southeast course. Mount San Francisco, a volcanic cone, is 11,000 feet above the level of the sea. The Colorado, a remarkable river, is the largest one in the Terri-

tory, and finds its beginning in Utah. It flows southerly along the western border, emptying its waters into the Gulf of Califor- nia. It has worn its bed to such an extent that some of its banks are perpendicular walls 7,000 feet high. Steamers traverse its waters for a distance of 612 miles.

The climate of the Territory is equable, and her altitude an as- surance against disease. The mines of the Territory are as yet undeveloped, though capital-seeking investment is by no means timid. Notwithstanding the mines of Arizona are generally in their infancy, more bullion has been produced in proportion to the money invested than in any other mining district except Cal- ifornia.

Now that machinery for mills and mining can be brought into the Territory at something like a reasonable price for transporta- tion, we expect to see some wonderful productions. Prospectors are swarming through the gulches and on the mountain-sides, lo- cating claims, and immigration is rapidly coming in.

Travelers and tourists of the highest authority have pro- nounced this to be one of the richest scenie sections of the globe. With the charms of nature spread out in so many ways to make Arizona attractive, there can be no doubt that in a short time this quarter of our happy nation will be populated by her represent- ative citizens, under whose care and nurture it must become a great source of pride and revenue. At no distant day every sec- tion of Arizona, it is presumed, will be awakened by the clank- ing of engines and the bustle of traffic. This wilderness will have undergone a change as if by magic; its stillness will have been broken by the joyons sounds of the church bells ringing out upon the balmy air, and the musical sounds of the mechanic will keep "time" with the progress of civilization.
