PINAL COUNTY. A post and express office. A beautiful, thriv- ing and prosperous town containing over 1,500 inhab- itants, handsomely situated on the south bank of the Gila River, in Pinal County, and almost in the center of the Territory. It is the county seat of the county, and lies about 35 miles from the far-famed Silver King Mine. Recent ad- ditions have been made to the Court House, a new jail built which has no equal in the Territory excepting Yuma. A new Catholic Church will shortly be constructed. There are ten public and one private school. Every educational ad- vantage can be had here known to the outside world. The climate, healthfulness and sanitary condition of the town is unequaled by any place in the Territory. Farming and grazing abound on all sides, and it is now a settled fact that any cereal or vegetable may be grown successfully here. Connection is made with the S. P. R. R. at the station of Casa Grande, 25 miles distant. The mail service is daily, and is carried by the Texas and California Stage Company. Casa Grande is its nearest banking town.

NOGALES.
PIMA COUNTY. Nogales (Walnuts) is situated on the United States and Mexican line. While apparently there is but one town, there are in reality two, that portion lying north of the " line," belonging to the United States, and the portion south of it, to Mexico. Nogales is the southern terminus of the New Mexico and Arizona Railroad (a branch of the A. T. & S. F.) and the northern terminus of the Sonora (Mexico) Central Railroad. Although not yet five years old, its claim to being the most enterprising town in Arizona is indisput- able; for what was a barren, uninhabited spot as late as the spring of 1883, is now one of the most thriving towns in Arizona. It lies between the Guababi Mountains on the . east and the Pajaritas on the west. Owing to its altitude -4,200 feet above the sea level-and the purity of its air and water, it has no rival as a health resort. Its climate is sim- ply perfect, the thermometer seldom reaching the freezing- point in winter, or an uncomfortable degree of heat in sum- mer. As a home for consumptives, or persons troubled with ' lung, bronchial, kidney, or other diseases, it is incomparable. Mining, stock-raising and its being the supply point for

southwestern Arizona and Sonora (Mexico) are the principal interests which support it; while a large proportion of the agricultural products of the above-mentioned districts are also handled here. Its being a transfer depot between the two countries also adds to its wealth and importance. No- gales is the center of one of the richest mining districts on the Pacific Coast, gold, silver, copper, lead, iron, etc., being found in every direction. Although Nogales is literally a "frontier town," yet for peace, quietness and obedience to the laws, it will compare favorably with any town on the Pa- cific slope, all reports to the contrary notwithstanding. No- gales has three large hotels, one of them being the finest in Arizona, four newspapers, three churches, three schools, large smelting works, etc., etc. Present population of the two towns about 2,600. Nogales is about 67 miles from Tucson, 85 miles from Benson, 65 miles from Magdalena, 17 miles from Plauchas de Plata, 26 miles from Promontorio, and 50 miles from Saric. It is the southwestern gateway to Mexico, the El Paso of the West.
