Pacific Theological Seminary.
Located on Academy Hill. This institution had its origin in San Francisco, in 1869, and was removed to Oakland in 1871. A thorough theological education, fitting candidates for the ministry, is given in a course embracing three years. There is no charge whatever for tuition or rooms, and aid is extended to those who take the full course and are especially needy. Rev. J. A. Benton, D. D., Professor of Sacred Lit- erature ; Rev. George Mooar, Professor of Theology ; Rev. A. L. Stone, San Francisco, President ; Rev. W. C. Pond, Secretary of the Board.
Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
This institution was founded in 1868, by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, under the patronage of the Rev. M. King, pastor of Oakland. It is located near the head of Lake Merritt, on Webster street. An elegant and substantial building, three stories in height, one hundred and ten feet in length, and seventy-five feet deep, was erected in 1873-4. This building is supplied with all modern im- provements for the comfort and convenience of the pupils. The basement contains a gymnasium ; the first floor contains parlors, music rooms, museum and library. The library consists of a thousand volumes, generally of a highly useful and instructive class of books. The second story contains class-rooms, oratory and recreation halls. Lying on the

shores of the lake, the young ladies have the privilege of enjoying the pastime and healthful exercise of boating.
The course of study embraces the elementary branches, the higher English branches, modern languages, literature, drawing, painting, music, ornamental needle-work, etc. The pupils are also instructed in those highly essential arts, good cooking and plain sewing. The number of pupils is nearly one hundred.
State Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute.
This institution is located near the State University at Berkeley. The farm consists of one hundred and thirty acres, eighty acres of which are on the hills fronting the bay. Pure water is supplied by hillside springs, and the elevated site ensures the purest of air. Altogether, a better location could not have been chosen. So healthful is the spot, that it is recorded that no case of sickness, sufficiently severe to require watching by night, occurred for two years among one hundred and twenty-five inmates. On the 17th of Jan- uary, 1875, the beautiful and costly stone building occupied by the institution was destroyed by fire, and the exigencies of the case, with more than a hundred helpless unfortunates to shelter and provide for, were indeed great. But the spirit of energy, coupled with that of benevolence, which inspires the citizens of Alameda County, found means to build a tem- porary structure without delay and, as early as April 21st, three months from the time of the disaster, the school was again opened.
The course of studies pursued at this Institute is very nearly the same as that embraced in the public schools and in the seminaries, with the addition of music, which is taught the blind as a means of obtaining a livelihood. The insti- tution is sustained by the State, but clothing and traveling expenses must be provided by the parents or guardians of the children, except in cases of extreme poverty, when a proper certificate from the County Judge will authorize the directors to supply clothing.
The management of the institution is entrusted to a Board of five Directors, appointed by the Governor. The present Board consists of the following named gentlemen : J. Mora Moss, Oakland; H. H. Haight, Alameda; E. J. Crane and D. D. Shattuck, San Francisco. Warring Wilkinson, Prin- cipal. D. D. Shattuck is Secretary and Treasurer.
