ing genius of some practical man shall place speedy locomo- tion within the reach of the people. As it is, people are well accommodated in Oakland. They can go north or south, east or west, without walking-though not so rapidly perhaps as they might wish, still, it is a ride. The fare on all the roads is ten cents for a single ticket, or four tickets for a quarter.

MORTUARY REPORT.
The report of the health officer for 1875 shows that Oak- land maintains her high reputation as one of the healthiest cities of the continent. We quote the following:
There were 338 deaths-183 males and 155 females. Of these decedents, 89 were born in Oakland, 40 in California, outside of Oakland, 116 in the United States, outside of California, and 93 in foreign countries. There were 131 who were married, 61 who were single, and 146 children.
There were 524 births-271 males and 253 females.
The population of the city is 25,000.
The death rate last year was 12.88 per thousand; in 1874 it was 12.65 and in 1873 it was 14.43.
There were 127 decedents under five years, 16 of whom were still-born. This gives the rate of mortality of children of that class at 35.8 per thousand. In 1874 it was 42.04 and in 1873 it was 53. This diminution in the death rate among children is quite remarkable. During the year ending June 30, 1875, the death rate among the children in San Francisco was 52 per thousand. In other words, of a thousand children who are in San Francisco at the beginning of the year, 52 will die before its close. In Oakland, with a similar number, there were 16 deaths less.
Oakland has pure water, a good system of drainage, an equable climate, free alike from the fogs and winds which are such powerful agents in promoting those diseases result- ing from colds and the long list of pulmonary and bronchial affections, hence the exceedingly low death rate is not a matter of surprise, but only a logical result of the favorable conditions of her surroundings.

STREET GUIDE.
Oakland is regularly laid out, streets generally crossing each other at right angles. The numbering of streets running North and South begin at South Front Street; and that on streets running East and West on East Front Street. Fifty numbers are allotted to each block, except in instances where it is necessary to use a less or greater number to carry out the general plan, which is that the numbers on each tier of blocks shall be identical through- out the city. Numbers have been placed on the houses in only a limited portion of the city, hence there is great difficulty in correctly locating the inhabitants. Recently, however, by the enterprise of the proprietors of BISHOP'S DIRECTORY, a general numbering of the houses throughout the entire city has been inaugurated, an improvement which will greatly facili- tate the publication of the Directory, and which will be of great benefit and convenience to the public.
