THE BOARD OF TRADE.

The Oakland Board of Trade was organized Septem- ber 10th, 1886. The first President was V. D. Moody, President of the First National Bank, who was succeeded in April, 1888, by F. K. Shattuck; J. M. Davies was the first Secretary.

Like similar organizations in this State, the Board of Trade is in effect a city improvement association, looking to all measures of public interest, extending a knowledge of the advantages of the city and county, and in all suitable ways promoting agricultural, commercial and industrial prosperity.

April 10th, 1888, the Board was regularly incorporated under the laws of the State, and its articles now provide for the usual commercial features of the arbitration and adjust- ment of differences.

OAKLAND

In February, 1889, the name was changed to "The Oakland City and Alameda County Board of Trade," to cover the wider purposes of the organization.

This Board is entitled to the credit of inaugurating the movement for the organization of the "California State Board of Trade," which has proved so important an aid to State progess, It has also been instrumental in obtaining for Oakland important terminal facilities not previously enjoyed, in securing a large harbor appropriation, the ex- tension of the boundaries of the city, the adoption of a new Charter, and other advantageous work for the city and county. It is the sole organization in the county in affilia- tion with the State Board and contributing to the main- tainance of that organization.

The membership the past year has included about fifty representative citizens, members of the different branches of trade, professions and industries of the city. The ar- ticles of incorporation impose an agreement to be gov- erned by the decision of a majority of the members. The action of the Board has been harmonious, and results have shown the advantage of such unity. The present officers are as follows:

President, Frank J. Moffitt; Vice-President, Chas. D. Pierce; Treasurer, V .. D. Moody; Delegate to State Board, J. S. Emery.

Directors-W. E. Dargie, M. J. Keller, F. A. Leach, V. D. Moody, F. K. Shattuck, O. E. Hotchkiss, M. J. Lay- mance, F. J. Moffitt, C. D. Pierce, J. S. White, E. W. Wood- ward; Secretary, C. M. Plumb.
