ALAMEDA."
THE CITY OF ALAMEDA has about 11,300 inhabitants; is located, we may say, on an island four miles in length and one mile in breadth, and is traversed by two steam railroads a quarter of a mile apart. Its climate is much better than that of San Francisco, only a few miles away. The fogs so common in the latter city, owing to the formation of the hills, pass to the North and South of Alameda, following the mountains north of Oakland and the hills south of San Francisco. The soil is a sandy loam and produces fruits and flowers of all kinds.
The streets are broad, ranging from sixty to one hundred feet. During the past year about twenty-six miles of streets have been graded and macadamized at a cost of $164,600, and nearly as much more is now under con- tract; also thirty miles of artificial stone sidewalk has been laid, and improvements are still being rapidly made.
The system of sewerage is the best ever devised. Central avenue extends the full length of the city, and follows its greatest elevation, or an altitude of about thirty feet above sea level, which gives a splendid fall for drain- age on each side, in a distance of half a mile to the north or south. There is an intercepting sewer on each side of the city, which is flushed by the tide every twenty-four hours. Forty miles of sewers are in the streets and avenues, and no city in the State is as well located for drainage, and none so well provided with sewers.
The town is lighted by eighty-five electric lights mounted on towers and masts, aggregating 200,000 candle power; this, with the plant and machinery, is owned by the city.
The public schools of Alameda consist of one High School, three Grammar Schools, two Primary Schools and one

ungraded school, with an enrollment of more than 2,000 pupils. The schools rank very high in educa- tional circles, and the High School is an approved school, whose graduates enter the University upon the recommendation of its principal.
There are two post-offices within the limits of the city, and the free delivery system is also under consideration by the post-office authorities.
There are two papers published in Alameda: The Encinal, weekly, which has been published for twenty-one years, and the Argus, semi-weekly, now in its twelfth year.
Numerous churches and fraternal organizations have been established, and are in a flourishing condition.
