*By virtue of an Act of the Legislature of 1877-78, approved April 1, 1878, authorizing the Board of Su- pervisors to increase the police force in their dis- cretion to any number not exceeding four hundred in all. An ordinance has been passed fixing the force at that number.
The salaries provided by law are as follows: Cap- tains. $1,800 per annum; clerk of Chief of Police, $1,800 per annum; property clerk, $1,800 per annum; detectives, $1.500 per annum; sergeants, $1,500 per annum; corporals, $1,404 per annum; patrolmen, $1,224 per annum.
From these salaries the sum of $24 per year ($2 per month) is deducted from the pay of every member of the force for the creation of "The Police Life and Health Insurance Fund."

The algual boxes in use consist of thirty-one crank boxes and one hundred and fifty-six automatic boxes. An alarm from an nutomatie box is given by pulling down the hook once and letting go, unerring mechan- iam doing the rest.
Complaints concerning the working of the Fire Alarm Telegraph, irregular striking of the bella and gonga, broken wires, ete .. should in all cases be made at the Fire Alarmı Office, Brenham Place.
In case of tumult or riot, whereby the services of the Police force are required, an alarm will be given, consisting of ten strokes upon the bells and gonga, repeated five times, which will be a signal for the Po- lice to assemble at the old City Hall. This alarm will be given only by order of the Mayor or Chief of Police.
The telegraph apparatus consists of about one bun- dred and forty-four miles of wire, divided into twenty- one circuits, of which thirteen are signal circuits, or circuits running to the signal boxes. Alarm gongs are located in the different Engine, Hook and Ladder, and Hose houses, each connected with the Central Office by the fire alarm circuits and eight alarm bells for striking the alarm box, located as follows: One on the Hall of the Exempt Fire Co., one on the Engine House on Sixth street, one on the Engine House on Stockton street, one on the Engine House on Second street, one on the Engine House on California street, one on the Engine House on Sixteenth street, one on the Engine House on Bryant street, and one on the Engine House on Pa- cific street. The bells and gongs are each struck at the same time by electrical machinery.
Fire Department.
The Paid Fire Department of the City and County of San Francisco was organized December 3, 1866.
The present force consists of three hundred and forty-three officers and men (including the Board of Engineers, the Clerk and Messenger of the Board of Fire Commissioners, the Veterinary Surgeon, and em- ployees at the Corporation Yard), fifteen steamers, to each of which is attached a hose reel, eight hose carriages, and five hook and ladder trucks; also six steamers, four hose reels, and one hook and ladder truck in reserve at the Cor- poration Yard, the condition of which is as fully kept up to the standard required as that of the apparatus in active service. Each steamer and hook and ladder truck is drawn by two horses, and the hose carriages by one each. Number of horses in the Department, eighty-two. Amount of hose in use, twenty-eight thousand feet, all of which is carbolized.

Fire Patrol.
Established in May, 1875, by the Board of Fire Un- derwriters. It is conducted on the same principle as the one in successful operation in New York City. The apparatus consists of wagons carrying rubber covers, fire extinguishers, ladders, and other appli- ances for extinguishing fires, saving life, and protect- ing property from damage by water. The force con- sists of fifteen men, including the Captain, who are on duty day and night. There are two stations, No. 1, located 106-108 Jessie street, and No. 2, no: theast corner of Eddy and Polk streets. Telegraph wires ex- tend from Station No. 1 to the office of the American District Telegraph Co., and also to the Palace and Grand Hotels.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1887, there were 68 schoola, employtog 799 teachers, and having an enrolled attendance of 43,311 pupils, of whom 23,002 were boys, and 20,309 girls. By the report of the School Census Marabal, Juue 30, 1986, the number of youth in the city between five and seventeen who are entitled to draw school money is 78,246, au increase of 4,167 for the year. The number attending school (private and church schools inclusive) during the year (including Chinese) was 54,233, a decrease dur- ing the year of 3,855. The number between five and seventeen years of age (not including Chinese) who have not attended school at any time during the year was 24.013, an increase from the preceding year of 8,155. The enrollment at the different schools was ss follows : High schools-Boys, 291 ; girls, 883; total. 1,174. Grammar schools-Boys, 7,020; girls, 7,733 ; total, 14,753. Primary schools-Boys, 12.620; girls, 11,215; total, 23,835. The financial condition of the Department is represented as follows : The city tax for school purposes in the year 1886-87 was .1136 centa on each $100. The total income was $843,- 541 43. The expenditures were $843,297 70. The amount paid teachers' salaries, $698,088 40; and also for March and July, 1885, $29,088 40.
EVENING SCHOOLS .- Number of pupils enrolled during the year 3,230. Average daily attendance, 1,030 ; average number heicnging to Evening Schools, 1,156. The terms and holidays are the same as those of the day schools. The studies are reading, arithme- tic, penmanship and composition or letter-writing, bookkeeping. industrial drawing, mathematics, etc .. and in the Lincoln Evening School a Spanish clasa is also taught. The Evening Schools are held in the following school buildings: Lincoln Grammar, South Cosmopolitan Primary. Washington Grammar, Haight Primary and Potrero Primary.
SCHOOL HOUSES .- The total number of build- ings used by the Department is 63, of which 57 are owned by the city and 5 rented. Of those owned by the Department, 4 are of brick and 54 are of wood. The amount paid for rented rooms was $6,185.
