THE SALISBURY ASSOCIATION, INCORPORATED

-

T HE SALISBURY ASSOCIATION, INCORPORATED exists because the public spirited citizens of Salisbury, Connecti- cut believed that various kinds of work making for town im- provement could be done more effectively, and with less friction and misdirection of energy, by a business-like organization, than by the occasional efforts of small groups of persons. To put it concisely, The Association stands for cooperation in all civic matters that may properly be fostered by it, without dupli- cating or interfering with the activities of other existing organ- izations that are necessarily more limited in their scope.

The Association was incorporated, without capital stock, on August 23, 1902, and in the language of its corporate certificate, as amended in 1913,-"The purpose or object of this corporation is to generally further the best interests of the Town of Salisbury and to protect and develop its natural attractions; and to hold and conduct carnivals, fairs, athletic competitions, and horticul- tural exhibitions, competitions and meetings."

In July, 1903, a very successful "Old Home Week" celebration was held under the auspices of The Association, at which time over a hundred persons became members of it, most of whom have retained continuous membership for the past ten years.

From time to time The Association has subscribed to various public improvements, and in the early years of its existence set out over five hundred shade trees along the town highways.

On September 1, 1913, The Association's first Fair, consisting principally of agricultural, horticultural and domestic exhibits, was conducted at Salisbury Center, and aroused a spirit of friendly competition that will surely result in the gradual improve- ment of all kinds of agricultural conditions in this locality. On account of the general interest shown in the Fair, both by exhib- itors and by four to five thousand spectators, it will be held again in 1914.

Historical Collections

The increase in membership has been so great during the past six months that 477 persons are now enrolled; 262 of them live in the Town of Salisbury and the other 215 represent twenty-two states of the Union and one foreign country. Although The Association's chief dependence is on its local membership, it can only attain its maximum strength by being a country-wide Salis- bury society, as well. In the past, Salisbury has been the mother of towns, and has given of her best to Vermont, New York, Ohio and the West, and there are hundreds of people of Salisbury origin, living elsewhere, who still think of her with interest and affection. To all these, membership in The Association, entailing as it does an almost nominal pecuniary obligation, cannot be other than a social bond, enhancing in many ways the pleasure of occasional visits here, and renewing, by proxy, personal activity in behalf of the Town and its people.

There are too, aside from sentiment, material reasons for joining The Association. Each member is entitled to free admis- sion to the Fair, and also receives a copy of any publication issued by The Association.

The Association intends to issue, annually, a volume similar to this one, so that, in the course of a few years the original sources of town history will be in print, and conveniently accessible. This work is of great importance as the original records whether in manuscript or on stone are liable to damage or loss, and the only sure method of preserving them for posterity is to place printed duplicates of them (so far as the data is concerned) in many hands, as speedily as possible.

The fiscal year of The Association commences on October Ist, and the membership fee for one year is $1.00, paid in advance. Men, women and children everywhere, who have an interest in Salisbury and its welfare, are cordially invited to join The Association, which is unique in its inception and aims, and abso- lutely unhampered by "red tape" or self-interest, either in the acquisition of members, or in the administration of its affairs.

VITAL RECORDS OF SALISBURY TOWN

Circa 1730-1767

CEMETERY RECORDS

INTRODUCTION

Researches among the official documentary sources of Con- necticut local history are usually made for the purpose of clarifying,-(a) general history, (b) genealogy, (c) real estate titles, (d) distribution of estates. Town Meeting Records (a), Vital Records (b), Land Records (including those of the Orig- inal Proprietors) (c) and Probate Records (d) are the respective classes of records to which the searcher must refer. These various classes are naturally complementary to each other, and frequently all of them must be consulted in conducting what may have been begun as a research in one class only. This is invariably true of comprehensive genealogical research.

To the continually increasing number of students of family history, vital records are of the first importance. For this reason and because of the comparative ease with which these records can be copied and arranged, they have been selected for publication in this and subsequent volumes of Collections, with the intention of printing this class of our records to about the year 1850.

The vital records in this volume furnish a striking instance of the changes in surnames occurring in a community in less than two hundred years. Of the one hundred and seventy dis- tinct family names which appear in the following list, only twenty are found here now, and not over ten of these can be identified with the old local families of the same names.

During the period 1730-1770 the family names which occur most frequently are :- Benton, Bingham, Bird, Camp, Chipman, Dutcher, Evarts, Fitch, Jewell, Landon, Lee, Moore, Owen, Reed, White and Woodworth. The vital record entries under these sixteen names exceed four hundred and seventy-five. To-day only five of these families have representatives in the male line resident here, and their total, for the five families, is only about twenty.

It should not be hastily inferred, however, that the old stock has "run out." On the contrary the cases of extinction from

natural causes are rare, and the disappearance of the majority of these families from this region is accounted for by their removal to newer sections of the country as they were opened to settlement.

The official recording of births, marriages and deaths in Salis- bury began with the election of the first Town Clerk in 1741. A birth was recorded and space was reserved immediately after the entry to allow for the recording of subsequent births in the same family. Death dates were sometimes recorded in direct connection with the original birth dates. In this way families were grouped as to births (except where space did not admit of it) and partially as to deaths, but marriages and many deaths were entered in the order in which they occurred, regardless of arrangement as to surnames. Again, the Clerk, occasionally, and presumably by request, recorded a birth that occurred else- where, prior to the settlement of the child's parents here. Again, some births antedating 1741, as for instance that of Margaret Dutcher, b. Sept. 26, 1734, probably did occur here, but were not recorded at the time they occurred, because no local office of record had then been established. On the other hand it must be remembered that there was probably no uniformity about the post-recording of such events that occurred prior to 1741, and it is inferential that a considerable number of births, marriages and deaths occurred here between 1719-20 (when the settlement at Weatogue on the Housatonic was commenced) and 1741, that were not recorded at all.
