This somewhat detailed explanation is made, because the family group system of recording was in operation here for over a century, until it was superseded by a more exact method.
It must also be remembered that there was every chance for omissions in the early town records, owing to general conditions and to an inadequate and casual system of recording. All things considered, it is surprising that we have so great a mass of data as does exist, and in any event, whatever the omissions or commissions may be, we cannot "go back of the returns."
In arranging the following vital record data for publication the spelling of surnames, baptismal and place names has been retained as in the original record, and every item of actual information has been included, but the order of the original

has necessarily been changed by the alphabetical arrangement, and words that are either obsolete or unnecessary to the sense have been omitted.
A transcript of the following records was made by the writer twenty years ago, and during the past winter each entry was transferred to a card index, which in turn was compared with the original record, in order to rectify any errors or omissions in the transcript.
The valuable assistance rendered by William B. Perry, Jr., Donald J. Warner, Richard K. Miles and William P. Russell (all members of The Association) in checking back the card index and in transcribing the records in several cemeteries, is gratefully acknowledged. The labor of compilation has also been greatly lessened by the painstaking and accurate stenographic work of Miss Gertrude Miner.
