CEMETERY RECORDS
INTRODUCTION
The earliest burial-places of the settlers of Salisbury cannot now be identified. No monuments remain (or were ever erected probably) to preserve the memory of those who died here prior to 1750, and only forty inscriptions remain for the period 1750- I771.
The old church-yard behind the Town Hall at Salisbury Center is the earliest prescribed burial-place in town of which we have certain knowledge. The greater part of it was given to the town, on May 29, 1750, by Robert Walker of Stratford, one of the original proprietors of Salisbury. Crossman (see note, p. 132) asserts that the first person buried in this cemetery, or as he says, "by the meeting-house," was Jehiel Moore. A child of this name, who died June 15, 1750 (see Vital Records), is doubtless the one referred to, but no gravestone remains to corroborate the assertion. The monument standing in this yard and erected in memory of Dr. Wade Clark, states that he died Aug. 6, 1750, and this is the earliest death date appearing on any gravestone now found within the limits of the town.
The three hundred inscriptions found in this old Center ceme- tery, together with those prior to 1800 found at Lime Rock and a few others found in isolated places, were published in pamphlet form in 1898. As a considerable part of that edition is still on hand, it has been thought unnecessary to reprint the inscriptions in this compilation.
The object of the present issue is to put into print all the other gravestone records (688 inscriptions) of the town with the excep- tion of those in the "New Cemetery" at Salisbury Center, and those at Lime Rock after 1800, which will appear in a future issue of the Collections.
Aside from the sentimental interest attaching to gravestone inscriptions, their historical value is very great, for several reasons. The first is that prior to, say 1845, our vital record system was so defective that many deaths were not recorded, and such omitted names and dates are frequently supplied by grave-

stones. A case in point is that of Dr. Wade Clark, and many others might be mentioned. Secondly, gravestones almost invari- ably state "age at death," and relationships as well, in the case of women and children-details which were frequently omitted from the manuscript record. Thirdly, gravestones often give further details as to titles, occupation, place and date of birth, manner of death, etc., which are not to be found elsewhere. Our ancient gravestones are also in a general sense indicative of the civic and social status of the persons commemorated, and of the esteem in which they were held, to a greater degree, perhaps, than modern monuments are. This because skilled stone-cutters were scarce, suitable kinds of stone difficult to procure and means of transportation most primitive. Consequently the expenditure of much time and labor on the part of relatives or friends was absolutely essential to the erection of such memorials. And finally, in spite of the apparent imperishability of stone, our climatic conditions cause comparatively rapid disintegration. Many early inscriptions have become illegible in so short a space as fifteen years, and some of much later date will soon be in the same case. It must be manifest therefore even to persons who instinctively regard "grave-yarding" as a melancholy and unnat- ural sort of avocation, that the preservation of this class of rec- ords is a matter of public service and benefit.
It may be that as this Association grows in membership and resources it can assume, to some extent, the care of several of our older cemeteries which need more attention than they are receiving now, and make of them places that are attractive rather than repellent. Town Hill Cemetery is an example of what the thought and effort of a few individuals can accomplish in the way of keeping beautiful a spot that is wholly beautiful by nature. By way of contrast, Dutcher's Bridge Cemetery, with less to commend it as to situation, is made still more unsightly by its generally neglected condition.
In this compilation it will be noted that surnames and baptismal names have been arranged alphabetically, by cemeteries. For- mulæ, and versification, curious or otherwise, not necessary to the sense, have been omitted, but every item of biographical value found is here noted.

Introduction
As to the method of making these lists it is proper to say that complete transcripts of the Town Hill and Chapinville Cemeteries were made in 1898 and partial transcripts of Dutcher's Bridge yard in 1893, and of Mt. Riga yard in 1901. During the present year (1913) such transcripts as were partial, were completed, and card indexed, and all of them (except those covering several of the small isolated yards) were verified by comparison with the original inscriptions.

CHAPINVILLE CEMETERY
This cemetery is situated about three-fifths of a mile east of Chapinville church, at the intersection of the roads that lead to Twin Lakes and Cooper Hill respectively.
This yard is one-half acre in area and was deeded to the town by John Weldon on Jan. 5, 1789 (see Land Records, Vol. 8, p. 41). The consideration was forty shillings, and the purchase was made pursuant to a town vote, passed Dec. 1, 1788. At that time the dwelling house of William Bement stood near the enclosure.
This yard receives very little attention as to up-keep, but at the present time is in fairly good condition.
