Publisher's Notice
T HE publishing of this book is the result of a wish I have long entertained of placing in permanent form and thus preserving the rapidly disappear- ing inscriptions upon the tombstones of my native town.
Mr. Charles Thomas Payne, of New York City, a descendant of a number of the families who founded the Town of Litch- field, cordially seconded my desires, and spent several summers transcribing them. This he has faithfully done for all prior to 1900, and many later inscriptions have been gathered.
I am pleased to acknowledge the hearty response to my cir- cular for subscribers.
The cuts were photographed by Sherry and Karl, and en- graved by the Hartford Engraving Co. The mechanical work was done by the Waterbury Blank Book Mfg. Co., and it is all as nearly possible a local undertaking.
With a hope that it will be a valuable addition to our Town's history, and of interest to all it is now presented to the public.

Preface
T HIS book is merely a collection of the inscriptions on gravestones and monuments in all the ceme- teries of that area comprising what was Litch- field Town before 1859. In that year nearly half of the Township, then known as the Society or Parish of the South Farms, was formed into the Town of Morris. The purpose of such a book is necessarily directed toward increasing knowledge of the past of Litchfield. So from the standpoint of the historian or the genealogist. any comprehensive data of this sort must include what may be known of Morris as well as Litchfield as it is now. The inscriptions contained here are believed to be complete to the year 1900. and a number have been added from tombs and monuments erected since that date.
Before each list of inscriptions found in the several grave- yards I have inserted something of their history ; and nowhere is the quaintness of old New England life better shown than in these dealings of man concerning his dead.
Enough has been said in other books, of the good and the great who lie sleeping here; they need not my hand to point their names or celebrate their virtues.
To Dwight Canfield Kilbourn, Esq., I confess my deep obli- gation : and credit is due him not only for publishing this book but for many suggestions which I have followed in its preparation.
August, 1902.
CHARLES THOMAS PAYNE.
West Burying Ground
This is the earliest of the burial places in Litchfield, and its establishment was nearly contemporaneous with the founding of the Town. The first notice of it appears in Volume One of the Land Records, as follows :
"An acompt of the High Ways In Litchfield In 1723. . . . the 2d high Way Runing East and West between Samuel Smedly his home Lott and the Widow allens home Lott of twenty eiglit Rods in bredth Sixty Rods West and then is twelue Rods Wide down to the swamp and then is laid out but six rods Wide thorou the swamp Which highway runs on the West side of the letle plain buting north upon Land Laid out to John Gay to make up the fifteen acres for his home Lott and so con- tinuel a West Line until it comes to the swamp or flooded Lands and all the Land upon the letele playn South of said highway to the swamp or flooded land which is not yet Laid out is Resarued and Laid out for a burying place Which high- way at the West End of the litle plain or burying place runs six Rods Wide throro the swamp and acrose the hill called buck's Neak With the same corce and bredth until it comes to the pine plain Which high Way is Called by the name of Mid- diel Street."
Here were interred nearly all of the pioneers of Litchfield, and the yard remained the principal burial ground of the Town until the Revolution.
Early in the Nineteenth Century a large tract was added on the western side.
