FOOTVILLE
Under date of December fifteenth, 1776, the following town vote in reference to the yard at Footville or West Morris ap- pears upon the records at Litchfield.
"Upon the Petition of sundry of the Inhabitants of the South- west Part of Litchfield voted that the Select Men he empow- ered to buy of Mr. Thomas Waugh Half an acre of Land about Twenty Rods South of Joseph Waugh's Dwelling House for the Sum of Thirty Shillings for the Purpose of a public Burying Place for the Town of Litchfield And in Case said Thomas Waugh doth give & execute a Deed of said Half Acre of Land to the Inhabitants of the Town for the use of a public Burying Yard then said Thomas Waugh his Heirs & Assigns shall have good Right foreuer to inclose said Burying Yard and use it for Pasturing provided he or they shall keep & main- tain convenient Bars for the People to pass and repass for the Purpose of burying their dead."
This bit of ground, lying some two miles west of Morris Meeting House, and southwest of Bantam Lake, was conveyed to the town nearly ten years afterward on November thirteenth, 1786. Since then another half acre has been added.
