This ground is on a slight eminence in a meadow nearly three miles northwest of the borough of Litchfield, adjacent to the road called for many years, "Beach Street," after the family who lived in the neighborhood and were buried here.

SOLDIERS' LOT, WEST CEMETERY

The Town of Litchfield several years ago voted to give a section of the West Cemetery for the burial of soldiers not having lots of their own, and in 1894 the citizens dedicated thereon a small monument, "IN MEMORIAM."

A few veterans have front time to time been interred on the lot, and in 1903 the State erected twenty-three headstones on it for those accredited to Litchfield quota in the Rebellion, who were buried in unknown graves on Southern soil.

The illustration shows this lot and the stones erected thereon.

MEMORANDA

SOLDIERS' MONUMENTS

A beautiful soldier's monument, erected by the citizens of Litchfield, stands in the Center Park, of Litchfield. It is of white marble and of elegant design. Another soldier's monu- ment is standing in the center of Northfield. Is of brown sandstone, and was erected by the citizens of Northfield directly after the end of the War of the Rebellion, and is said to have been the first of the soldier's monuments erected in the country.

The inscriptions appear in other parts of this book.

CARE OF CEMETERIES

In Litchfield an association has been formed to care for the West Cemetery. By payment of a small annual due the sub- scriber can have his lot and monument taken care of.

The East Cemetery is of two divisons, the old part, which is taken care of by the town, if at all, and the northern part, which belongs to the Litchfield Cemetery Association, and is taken care of by it at a charge of two dollars per year to the lot owners.

The other yards in the town are uncared for.

In Morris an association has been lately formed to restore and care for the East Yard there. Generous subscriptions have been given, and the work has been well begun.

All of the cemeteries, in both Litchfield and Morris, are in a pretty respectable condition.

REVOLUTIONARY DEAD

In the southeast corner of the East Cemetery at Litchfield are the remains of a large number of Revolutionary heroes. They were buried here, in trenches side by side without coffins -and there is nothing to mark their resting places.

ACADIANS

In the Morris Cemetery are also the unmarked and unknown graves of many of the Acadian prisoners who were quartered upon Litchfield at the close of that war -- 1755.
