MORRIS
The town of Morris was originally the parish or society of South Farms in Litchfield, and it was not until 1859 that its extensive area was incorporated into a separate town. This is the reason why the two burying grounds of Morris are in- cluded in this book.
I Litchfield Town Records 81.
"At a Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Litchfield according to Law Decmr 8th A D 1747 . ... . voted Liberty to the Inhabitants in the South Farms to have one quarter of an Acre of Land laid out by any two of the Select Men where they shall judge convenient for the use of a Burying Place for the Inhabitants of the Town."
No record has been found that the two selectmen ever car- ried this out, but four miles south of Litchfield, on the road to the meeting house in Morris lies this ancient burying ground on a hillside sloping to the south. The oldest stones are very near the road. Within a hundred years enlargements have brought the area of this burial place to three acres, and it has been well cared for.
