MORAVIAN BURYING GROUND.

Only two headstones reinain, of the many that once stood in the burying ground near the Mission House of the " United Brethren." at "Sichem in the Oblong." The inscriptions on them read Mary, wife of James Alworth, d. Feb. 24. 1794. in her Soth yr., and Ezariah Smith, d. Oct. - , 1784. ae. 67. A friend has furnished another, copied some 35 years ago. but which has since disappeared-James Alworth, d. --- , 1786. ae. 73. This old burying ground was on the Hiram Clark farm, near the western shore of Wequadnach (Indian Pond).

On the Connecticut, or eastern shore of the lake was the village of the Wequadnach Tribe, and here, exactly over his grave, stands the Monument erected by the Moravian Historical Society, to perpetuate the memory of David Bruce, an early Missionary among them. It reads : "David Bruce, A Minister of the Gospel in the Church of the United Brethren, from Edinburgh in Scotland, Died July 9, 1749, at the Wequadnach Mission, Dutchess County, N. Y." The opposite face records the death of Joseph Powell, a later Missionary, who is buried at Sichem, and reads : "Joseph Powell, a Minister of the Gospel, in the Church of the United Brethren, Born 1710, near Whitechurch, Shropshire, England, Died Sept. 23, 1774, at "Sichem in the Oblong."

VAN ALSTYNE BURYING GROUND.

--

In the absence of any name it is given the above, which may be as appropriate as another, from the fact that the family owned the farm of which it is a part, and were among the first to be buried in it.

William Van Alstyne was the first of the name in Dutchess County, and at one time his descendants were numerous. Only a memory of them remains now ; not one bearing the name, and only one descend- ant by any name is to be found in the County today.

SMITHFIELD BURYING GROUND.

The burying ground at Smithfield, or " The City," as it is called, is situated on the opposite side of the road from the church of the same name. It is quite old, many of the inscriptions being nearly illegible. A large sum of money has been spent during the last few years in clearing the ground from underbrush, setting up fallen head-stones, etc .. showing a great interest in preserving these old records. There was formerly another burying ground, older than this. adjoining the church. ALLEN, Abby J. White, wife of James Allen, b. Feb. 12. 1797, d. July 4, 1877.
