THE AMENIA BURYING GROUND.

The old CEMETERY of Amenia lies about a mile north-east of the present village. The Church Society to which it belonged was called " Carmel in the Nine Partners;" the building went by the name of the " Red Meeting House." The land for both was donated by Stephen Hopkins.

All traces of the old church have long since disappeared, but the men who built it, and who worshipped in it lie in the little crowded Cemetery. It is to preserve their names inscribed on the rapidly disintegrating stones that this record is made.

With a few exceptions, there have been no burials in this ground for nearly forty years. At one time it was greatly neglected, but now it is in good hands, and will be cared for in the future. Even the best of care cannot restore the fading lines of the quaint old in- scriptions, nor bring to light the missing names on some of the broken stones. There are two or three so broken that nothing remains by which to identify them.
