In the "Addenda" Mrs. Goodenough has printed skeleton pedigrees of her other lines of descent. As no references or authorities are cited, it is difficult to judge the accuracy of these many lines. On the face of them it looks as though they were compiled in a genealogical library, where all sorts of books are used without discrimination. If the use of the oft-repeated but unacceptable Mayflower descent from Peter Brown through the reputed son, Peter, "Jr.," of Windsor, Conn., is typical, then each of the lines thus given must be carefully checked. Proof of the relationship of the two Peters has never been forthcoming, and the Society of Mayflower Descendants has consistently

refused to accept for membership descendants of Peter of Wind- sor who have claimed a right to membership through him. Mrs. Goodenough is aware of the dispute over this relationship, for she speaks of it on pages 215-216, and concludes that Peter of Windsor must have been a son of Peter of Plymouth because a "lineal descendant." John Brown, writing in 1857 "only 237 . years" later, called "himself a descendant on the side of his father of one of the company of the Mayflower who landed at Plymouth in 1620." John Brown, whoever he was, may have been such a descendant on the side of his father, but not neces- sarily in the Brown linc, since he does not specify the line, how- ever strong the assumption that he meant the Brown line. "Only 237 years" is a long period of time, and traditions are established in much shorter periods, traditions easily proved false.

The section devoted to royal ancestry is based on Browning's Americans of Royal Descent, a notoriously unreliable book. It is well known that Browning himself repudiated some of the pedigrees he printed, even in the ninth edition of his much used book. Many others have since been proved incorrect. We hope that the new edition, now being prepared by Mr. John S. Wurts, of Germantown, Philadelphia, will be more reliable, and that no pedigree will be included which is not supported by documentary evidence of the most valid and conclusive kind. This reviewer cannot criticize the royal ancestry of the Leonards, based on a supposed descent from the barons Dacre, as he has had no occasion to check the line. However, the inclination is to distrust it in the absence of references and authorities other than Browning.

Incidentally this book is a new and enlarged edition of Mrs. Goodenough's Memoirs of the Leonard, Thompson and Haskell Families, originally published in 1928.

Revolutionary Soldiers. List of Connecticut Revolutionary Soldiers Mentioned in Beckwith's Almanac, New Haven 1850 to 1870 inclusive ; also War of 1812; 1856 to 1889 inclusive. Com- piled by Miss Clara Louise Weed, 1927. Multigraphed, 16 pages, indexed. Order from the compiler, 600 Orange Street, New Haven, Conn .; $2.50.

Interest in those who took an active part in the establishment of the nation continues to be one of the mainsprings of historical and genealogical research. Every year sees more and more work done towards the rescuing from oblivion of the memory of those who served in the Revolutionary War. Every step taken in this direction is a welcome contribution.

Miss Weed's compilation contains the names, ages at death, and residences of the last Connecticut survivors of the war, with occasionally additional facts concerning them. It is difficult for

the average searcher to find a complete and accessible file of Beckwith's annual almanac, which from 1850 contained a depart- ment, "Chronicles of Events in Connecticut." Even when accessible, it requires much time to thumb through these unin- dexed pamphlets. The present compilation, which lists 180 names of Connecticut soldiers, should therefore prove useful, and is recommended to historical libraries. D. L. J.

Bullard. Bullard and Allied Families : The American Ancestors of George Newton Bullard and Mary Elizabeth Bullard. By Edgar J. Bullard, 2111 David Stott Bldg., Detroit, Mich., 1930. Cloth, 8 vo., illustrated, indexed, pp. 288+49. Also: Other Bullards, a supplementary pamphlet, pp. 75+10. The two, $10.00.

This book, attractively bound, well arranged and indexed, is devoted to the ancestry of Mr. Bullard's children. Very full treatment is accorded to the main families,-Bullard, Perrine, Baldwin, Dutcher, Newton, Perrin, and Graham, collateral descendants being brought down to a considerable extent. The other family names included are Allen, Almy, Ashley, Backus, Babcock, Bacon, Ball, Barbour, Barnes, Beers, Benjamin, Bennett (three families), Bemis, Bigelow, Blagge, Bradstreet, Brown, Bruen, Bugbee, Burritt, Carpenter, Caulkins, Chamberlin, Champion, Charles, Clark (two families), Cooper (two families), Cooke, Cross, Curtis, Derby, Dudley, Eddy, Ely, Fenton, Fitch, Flagg, French, Frisbie, Fulham, Fuller, Goodsell, Graves, Gris- wold, Gunn, Hagar, Hand, Hapgood, Haskell, Heath, Heming- way, Hewes, Hoadley, House, Howe, Hutchinson, Ide, Jennings, Joiner, Jones, Kilborn, Kingsley, Lakin, Larkin, LaRue, Lathrop, Linsley, Livermore, Loker, Mitchell, Moore (two families), Morgan, Nase, Nash, Osborn (two families), Oviatt, Palmer, Patterson, Phippeny, Pierce (two families), Porter, Postal, Pratt (two families), Redway, Rice, Root, Rowley, Royce, Senior, Sherman (two families), Simmons, Skinner, Smith, Stebbins, Taylor, Thompson, Treadway, Turner, Tybott, Venables, Wade, Ward, Warren (two families), West, Weston, Whale, Wheeler, Wheelock, Whitney, Wilder, Willard, Willey, Williams, Wilson, Winton, Yorke.

As the writer supplied information to the author on a few of these families, it is in better taste to refrain from comment or criticism. The Bullard pamphlet, separately bound, rescues from oblivion much data that the author collected while working out his own line; it will help some descendants in establishing their lines, and constitutes a start towards a history of the Bullard family. It is our understanding that a second pamphlet, containing one important correction (on the Bennett family) and many additional ancestral lines, together with further mis- cellaneous data on branches of the Bullard family, will be issued

Fitch. History of the Fitch Family 1400-1930, by Roscoe Conkling Fitch. Privately published. 2 vols.

This is a publication which has been eagerly awaited by genealogical students. Sumptuous in every mechanical feature, beautifully illustrated and rich in tabular pedigrees, the two volumes are, nevertheless, keenly disappointing to the present reviewer, who had looked forward hopefully to an authentic history of this Connecticut family.

Research seems to have been confined almost entirely to tracing the family in England; and, since this work was done under the direction of the College of Heralds, this section of the book has undoubted interest for descendants who desire to trace back of the arrival of the family on American shores.

From a genealogical point of view, the value of the book stops there. The account of the American Fitches is both incomplete and inexcusably inaccurate. So far as the incompleteness is concerned, it appears to have been deliberate. The design of the book was quite evidently to enlarge on the achievements of a few prominent branches, and this apparently did not leave space for any consideration at all of the less prominent branches. This is so patently true that the title of the book is actually a misnomer, and a less misleading title would be "Favored Fitches"-for only the favored ones are in it.

The history of the early generations in Connecticut appears to have been based largely on secondary sources, and this may explain the surprising nature and number of inaccuracies that have found their way into these volumes. For example, it is stated (page 106) that the first Thomas Fitch of Norwalk was Deputy to the General Court, 1673, 1676, 1680-86, 1691-92, 1694, and Deputy Governor of Connecticut. The public services of this man can all be found (aside from local town services) in the printed Colonial Records of Connecticut, and it is strange that these were not consulted. They show that Thomas Fitch was Deputy in 1673, but no other year; that he was Captain of the Fairfield County Troop in 1673 and 1676; and that he was Commissioner (i. e., Justice) for the town of Norwalk in 'some of the other years mentioned. He was never at any time Deputy Governor of the Colony.

When such startling misinformation as the above is found in a family history, it is too much to hope that the genealogical data contained therein will prove reasonably accurate. Turning to the family of Samuel Fitch (pages 204-206), one of the brothers of the recently created Deputy Governor, it is correctly stated that he left two sons, Samuel and Thomas. But the second Samuel is given two wives, Sarah Bryan and Mary Gris- wold. Only the first of these belonged to him, and he died in

1876

BOOK REVIEWS

1690 leaving an only daughter; his wife Sarah survived him and died in 1698. The Samuel who married Mary Griswold was actually a third Samuel, nephew of the second Samuel, and son of his brother Thomas of Wethersfield.

Incidentally, another blunder is made in this branch, due to following Stiles' History of Wethersfield in its statement that Abigail Fitch, who married Abraham Kimberly in 1696, was daughter of Thomas Fitch of Wethersfield by his second wife, Sarah Boardman. Since Abigail Goodrich, the first wife of Thomas Fitch, died in 1684, only some twelve years before the daughter Abigail married, it is obvious that the daughter Abigail could not have been by the second wife unless she married at the age of eleven or younger. As a matter of fact, this Abigail Fitch was called granddaughter in the will of her maternal grandmother, the mother of Abigail (Goodrich) Fitch.

The early generations of the family of Joseph Fitch of Windsor, another of the immigrant brothers, have been badly confused. This is a very difficult branch, and its elucidation should not have been attempted without a thorough investigation of original sources in Windsor.

It is quite apparent that only the most superficial work was done on the early American generations, and that the account given in this "History" was based largely on unreliable printed "authorities" and not on contemporary records. It is a great pity that a publication of this type, so splendidly accoutred in binding, paper, and illustrations, should be so sadly defective in what is after all the most essential part of a family history,-the genealogical data.

The accounts given of some of the prominent descendants con- tain much that will be of interest to the branches concerned. A large section of one volume is devoted to the career of that unfortunate genius, John Fitch, whose claim to be considered the inventor of the steamboat is here presented in detail. Although those who have studied the subject are usually willing to concede the priority of Fitch's achievement to that of Fulton, the public in general is not well informed on the subject, and it is a pleasure to see the evidence for Fitch so fully presented. As a matter of fact. several before Fulton successfully operated ships by steam, and the credit, as with most important inventions, should not be given entirely to a single inventor.

May we not hope that the Fitch Family Association will recog- nize the desirability of issuing additional volumes, not only to correct the genealogical errors contained in the present two volumes, but also to include the record of the very large number of branches which are missing from the present work ?
