BOOK REVIEWS
By GILBERT H. DOANE
This department is limited to a consideration of recent publications on the subjects of American genealogy or colonial history. Authors and pub- lishers can secure a review by sending one copy of the book to the reviewer, Office of the Librarian, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Neb.
SHERWOOD. Daniel L. Sherwood and his paternal ancestors, including evidences both in England and America from the first mention of the name in history about seven hundred and fifty years ago down to and including Thomas Sherwood, the American Pioneer, and Francis Sherwood, the Maryland pioneer, and some of their many descendants. In ten chapters, genealogical and biographical, by Andrew Sherwood. Svo. Portland, Ore., 1929. Order from Andrew Sherwood, 69th and East Burnside Streets, Portland, Ore.
This book, bound in a serviceable dark blue cloth, is fairly well made, although it probably would not stand a great deal of use without a more substantial binding. In addition to some half-tone prints of Sherwood Forest, there are several excellent portraits of members of the later gener- ations of the family. The use of bold face type in place of italics in citing references is, however, poor typography, especially since the printer has used bold face also in caption headings.
The first chapter is concerned with the family in England and its sup- posed connection with Sherwood Forest and Nottingham. There is nothing new or of any importance in this chapter.
In the second chapter (pp. 29-82) most of the space is devoted to the history of Thomas of Fairfield, Connecticut; with some discussion of the descendants of Francis, of Maryland, and the Sherwoods in Virginia. After a careful reading of this chapter one reaches the conclusion that Mr. Sherwood accepts the theory that Thomas, of Stratford (d. 1657), was tho son of Thomas, of Fairfield (d. 1655), and therefore aged 10 in April, 1634, and married in 1639. This famous Sherwood tangle has troubled many genealogists, but Mr. Jacobus, who has recently studied documentary sources, informs us that this theory is incorrect, and that while Thomas of Stratford may have been related to Thomas of Fairfield, he was certainly not the latter's son. We would have preferred to have seen the problem stated and the evidence presented by Mrs. Lucia Russell Fellows of Salt Lake City, who has worked upon the Sherwood family for many years; for Mr. Sherwood has hopelessly mixed quotations from documents, passages from Mrs. Fellows's letters to him, and interspersed these with comments of his own. Indeed, it is to be regretted that he did not ask Mrs. Fellows to write this chapter. As it stands, it is only by very carefully reading and actually charting the facts stated that one can determine what Mr. Sherwood is trying to say and the relationships he is attempting to establish.
Chapter three is devoted to the next three generations of Mr. Sherwood's line: Isaac2, Daniel3 and Daniel4. Here again there would seem to be a controversy, namely that concerning the wife of Daniel3. Several members of the family claim her to have been Ruth Bradley, daughter of John and Hannah (Sherwood) Bradley. According to Chief Justice Bradley, this
1607
BOOK REVIEWS
Ruth was born in 1699, whereas the tombstone of Daniel Sherwood's wife, discovered in 1925 by Mr. Starr S. Sherwood, indicates that she was born in 1690. It is known that Daniel Sherwood must have married this Ruth, whoever she may have been, in or about 1711, as their first child was born in 1712. So, on the face of it, the Bradley theory does not hold. Here again documentary evidence must be forthcoming before the matter can be determined.
The remaining chapters are devoted to the succeeding generations of Mr. Sherwood's line, which is: Thomas1, Isaac2, Daniel3, Daniel4, Henry5, Daniele, Albert7, Andrews, with considerable detail regarding the descendants of Daniel6 in all branches. Here Mr. Sherwood is working upon more certain ground, and his facts are undoubtedly correct, although one suspects there are many errors due to poor proof-reading, a few of which the reviewer has caught such as "1775" for "1756" on p. 83, "Aiken" for "Aiton "' on p. 248, etc.
Unfortunately Mr. Sherwood has not arranged his material in the form now generally approved by reputable genealogists, nor has he made it easier for those using his book to follow through a given line by assigning each descendant an individual number. To add to this difficulty, he has failed to always indicate generation number, which would have helped some. Worst of all, there is no index, which is inexcusable in any book called a genealogy or containing genealogical data. One literally has to read the entire book to find what one wants.
The book does present, however, a great deal of the personality of its octogenarian author and his more immediate relatives, the type of record that very quickly becomes forever lost, once these individuals pass on. Herein lies its value.
NEW ENGLAND. The Real Founders of New England : stories of their life along the Coast, 1602-1628, by Charles Knowles Bolton. Svo. Boston, 1929. $3.50. Order from The F. W. Faxon Company, 83 Francis Street, Back Bay, Boston, Mass.
This nicely printed book has been produced on a good heavy grade of book paper, and bound in a substantial dark blue cloth. It is illustrated by charming pen and ink sketches by Mrs. Ethel Stanwood Bolton, wife of the author; by maps drawn by Miss Marjorie Crandall; by reproductions of the title-pages of several early accounts of New England; and by facsimiles of the signatures of some of the early worthies.
Mr. Bolton, librarian of the Boston Athenaeum, and author of several other books of a historical-genealogical nature, has written in his usual delightful style about the early settlements along the New England coast, recounting many stories of hardships, many amusing incidents, and not a few accounts of disagreement among the Fathers. Mr. Bolton has so steeped himself in the history of the colonization of New England that his brew is strong and rich in flavour, great to the delectation of the connoisseur. Granted, Mr. Bolton could have greatly amplified his material, but this would have defeated his purpose, which was to produce a brief, readable account of these early settlers, which should serve both as a reference book for the harried librarian and as an impetus to further study for the genealogist or leisured amateur.
The condition of the country prior to settlement is first described. In the second chapter is to be found an account of the visitors to the coast between 1602, when Bartholomew Gosnold explored a portion, and 1622. Omitting any detail about the Plymouth settlement, which is so amply described in many places, he takes up the story of other settlements and attempts at settlement between 1622 and 1625 in Chapter Three. In Chapters Four to Six, the settlement of "Shawmut"' (now Boston) and the connection of the Blaxton family with it is discussed. Chapter Seven is devoted to the

"Outposts of Empire," other settlements along the coast. In the eighth chapter the story of the Blaxtons is continued; whereas the final chapter is devoted to an attempt to analyse "The Colonial Mind." There are four appendices : A, "A Tentative List of Old Planters and Sojourners in New England Before 6 September 1628," preceded by a brief but excellent bibliography of other such lists; B, "Early Settlements and Their Founders"; C, "Some Authorities," which comprises a fine, selected bibli- ography of material relating to this period of New England history; D, "Early Names" in which is listed the early names of present day towns and regions, a very valuable list, which we should like to see extended and amplified to include all such names for all New England towns and localities. There is a thorough index.
Mr. Bolton himself has very kindly supplied us with the following list of additions and corrections which have come to his notice:
P. 99, 17th line. For "deputy governor"' read "an Assistant."
P. 100, last paragraph. Read: "On the 17th of June 1630 Winthrop and others."' Also below: "While the men on the 12th of July put up tents, "' etc.
P. 105, 25th line. 1625 should be 1626, it is said.
P. 114, 2d line. Should read "cobbled street."
P. 138, 4th line. Read: "Stage Fort."'
P. 150, Perhaps omit Fenton, Fisbell, Key, R. White.
P. 155, Add Samuel Johnson, brother of the famous Isaac.
P. 168, Add a trading post at Dorchester, described by Mr. Bolton in Boston Evening Transcript for 1 March 1930.
