Zachariah7 Eddy was born in Middleboro, Massachusetts, in 1778, and was taken to Vermont as an infant. Here he grew to manhood, but the comparatively unproductive land there did not hold much attraction for him, and the westward movement was under way. Like many other adventuresome young Ver- monters of the day, he "went west" in search of better and more arable land. By 1798 he was in Marietta, Ohio, then the "North- west Territory," with his brothers. He is said to have taken up land near Cincinnati, but he was not satisfied with the climate, and started back eastward. In 1801 he was taxed as a single man in Warren, Pennsylvania. There he lived the remainder of his life and died in 1872. By his wife, Rose Stewart, he was the father of eight children, of whom six married and had descendants, one of whom is Mr. Horton.

This is one of the most satisfactory family memorials we have ever examined, in that it has been compiled with painstaking accuracy. Whenever it has been necessary to make an assump- tion, Mr. Horton has done it with a logical regard for known facts, and has not hesitated to call it an assumption. Moreover, he has not begrudged us information about the brothers and sisters of each successive Eddy in his line of descent. So fre-

quently one finds a volume of this sort listing only the child in each generation through whom the memorialist's descent comes. As a genealogist Mr. Horton deserves high rank on the basis of this book. His previous book, The Ancestors and Descendants of Isaac Horton (1912), we have not seen.

Beach-Walkley. Beach Family Reminiscences and Annals, by David Nelson Beach. Meriden, Conn., The Journal Press, 1931. Obtainable from Mrs. Ellen W. Beach, 228 N. Main St., South- ington, Conn. Price : $3.00.

This a well-printed volume of 244 pages, bound in red cloth. It is not indexed.

In no sense can this be called a genealogy, although the pros- pectus of it announced that "the book includes the genealogy of the Beach family in New Jersey and the Walkley family in Con- necticut." To be sure the author, the late Rev. David Nelson Beach, gives his line of descent from Thomas1 and Sarah (Platt) Beach of New Haven, through the son, Zopher2, who settled in New Jersey (Cf. NEW HAVEN GENEALOGICAL MAGAZINE, vol. 1, p. 148-49, Jan., 1923), Samvel3, David+, Juniah3 and Susannah (Tichenor), David Juniah6 and Huldah (Crowell), Joseph Wick- liff7, his father. Joseph Wickliffe Beach married Mary Angeline Walkley, daughter of Stephen Walkley, whose father, Jonathan Walkley, was descended from Richard Walkley, the emigrant. who settled in Durham, Connecticut. Many uncles, aunts, and cousins are mentioned as such throughout the book, but the exact relationship of these can be determined only by a very careful reading of the book, which, most unfortunately, is not indexed. And sometimes, even with careful reading, it is difficult to find out just how an "uncle" comes into the family, as it is frequently used as a "courtesy" title. Moreover, very few genealogical dates are given.

However, the book makes interesting reading, for the Rev. David Nelson Beach was a keen man and his friends and acquaintances many and varied. It is really a volume of remi- niscences, as the title indicates, "dictated ... at the request of his children during the summer of 1926." He died before it was entirely finished and before he had an opportunity to correct the manuscript in any way. It is published practically as he dictated it.

It is to be greatly regretted. as we have said, that there is no index, and that so many dates, which must have been easily obtainable by the editors, are omitted. Hence to the genealogist, the book has only a slight value, however much it may be treas- ured by friends and members of the family.
