Dan'11 Farrand Pastor of sd Church

Canaan, Decembr 5th A.D. 1769

The Church Members in the Second Society of Canaan, Convened at the Meeting House in Order to be formed into a distinct Church of Christ, as recommended above. Mr. Daniel Farrand the Pastor of the Church of Christ in Canaan Presiding & leading them thereto at their desire ---- & being thus convened the following ( leaf torn RHC) of Faith ---- Articles for Church government (leaf worn off RHC) were proposed to be adopted & ent --- (leaf worn off RAC) - -- thus ( ?)

The Confession of Faith

1 We Beleave that there is one only living & true God One in Essence in three distinct Persons, Father Son & Holy Ghost. 2 That God made all Things of Nothing by the Word of his Power & extends his Providence over all his Creatures -- Ruling them for his own Glory.

3. That God created Man at first after his own likeness in knowledge, Righteousness & true holiness & so in a happy Estate.

4. Man did not continue in that Estate; but our first Parents Sinned, & by eating the forbidden Fruit; broke the first Covenant & we together with them & all Mankind fell from that Estate by Sinning against God; & so are by Nature Children of Wrath & liable to the pains of Hell forever. 5. That God is rich in Mercy; hath not left all Mankind to perish in a State of Sin & Misery; but from all Eternity Elected some to everlasting Life; & ordained to bring them to a State of Salvation by a Redeemer.

P 2

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, EAST CANAAN, CONN

6. That the Lord Jesus Christ, who is both God & Man in two distinct Natures in one Person, is the only Redeemer of God's Elect; who hath offered up himself a Sacrafice unto God to purchase eternal Salvation for them.

7. The Holy Spirit of God who is the Sanctifier & Comforter whose Special Office it is to apply the Redemption purchased by Christ to the Elect; by working Faith in us, doth unite us to Christ; & make us affectually partakers of the Benefits -(torn leaf) & Obedience - insomuch that they who do

Beleave (torn leaf) , and Justified from the Guilt of all their Sins -(torn leaf) on the Account of the Righteous- ness of Christ or the - -(torn leaf) Meretorious Cause of it, & they are Sanctifyed through it -. -(torn leaf) have right to all the Privileges of the Sons of God.

P 3 8. God requires of us Repentance towards God & Faith in Jesus Christ & holiness in Heart & Life : & though they be not Meretorious Conditions of Salvation, yet Necessary Means: He also requires the diligent Use of those Means that He hath Appointed in his Word to prepare Men for the enjoyment of himself, which are the Reading & Hearing & Preaching of the Word -- the Sacraments both of the Lord's Supper & Baptism & Prayer.

9. That there will be a Resurrection of the Dead, of the Just & Unjust, & a Union of Soul to those raised Bodies; so that they being Joined together shall be Subjects capable of Happiness or Misery to all Eternity.

10. That there will be a Great & General Judgment at the last day; when the Son of Man, (who is the true God) attended with his Holy Angels; shall appear & set by on a Throne of Glory shall Judge the World in Righteousness; the sim of which Judgment shall be; that the Wicked shall go away into Everlasting Punishment; but the Righteous into Life Eternal. 11. We Beleave that these Doctrines & Articles Faith are contained & Revealed in the Scriptures of the Old & Now Testa- ment which Books are of divine Authority & Revealed by God -- the only Revelation that is so, containing all Things Necessary to be known & done in Order to Eternal Salvation.
