to all the assurance, that as our day is so shall our strength be, "& recognizing my dependence upon Him for grace to fulfil the arduous & Most responsible duties of the Bishop of this church, & having become satisfied that the call of this church is also the call of the Great Head of the church, I do most cheerfully accept the call which you have given. In accepting this call, it is done with the confidence, that every member of this church will so walk as becometh the Gospel of Christ & will always remember their Pastor at the throne of Grace, in humble, fervent & believing prayer, and that we shall all strive together in every method of God's appointment, for the progress of the Godpel at home and abroad. "If the union which we now contemplate shall be permitted to take place, I trust it will be the theme of praise to our Redeemer, in "that temple not made with hands eternal in the heavens ."

On the 9th day of October 1833, the following answer was returned to the Ecclesiastical Society, through their committee .


"To John Franklin, Albert B. Kellogg & Lewis Lawrence, the committee of the second Ecclesiastical Society, of Canaon, Litchfield County, Conn.


Brethren, you have by a vote of your Society of the 26th of September last given me a call to settle with you in the work of the Gospol ministry as your Pastor. This call has been with me the subject of enquiy & meditation for many days & I have concluded it to be my duty to accept the call, & hereby do most cheerfully accept the same.

After the above answers were given & accepted by the church & Society, Mr. Woodbridge was examined by a committee of the Association, consisting of three nearest Pastors ---- Messrs. Prentice, Lathrop & Eldridge (only two of whom attended to wit, Messrs. Prentice & Eldridge, & have been approved, letters missive were sent from the Church & society in Canaan to each of the churches belonging to the consociation, re- questing them to meet by their Pastors & Delegates in conso- P 73 ciation, on the 22nd day of October, at the house of Ezekiel Daboll, for the purpose of examining & ordaining the Pastor elect


A quorum of the consociation appeared at the time & place appointed, and having organized, they had read the call of the church & society & the answers thereto & the credentials of the candidate, they proceeded to his examination in Divinity church government &c & his personal piety, and having approved of all, they voted to proceed to ordain & install the Pastor elect on Wednesday the 23rd day of October, 1833, at the meet- ing house in North Canaan at 11 o'clock A.M. by the laying on of the hands of the Presbytery, according to Apostolic directions, practice & order.


Wednesday the 23rd of October, 1833 The consociation in conformity to their vote of the 22nd proceeded to ordain & install the Pastor-olect, & the various parts were performed by the following persons. Rev. Edward Tyler, of Colebrook offered up introductory prayer. Rev. Timothy Woodbridge, of Austerlitz, Columbia County, N. Y. preached the sermon. Text 1 Tim. 1, 11

Rev. Hart Talcott, of Warren gave the charge to the Pastor. Rev. Joseph Eldridge, of Norfolk gave right hand of fellowship Rev. Leonard E. Lathrop, of Salisbury gave charge to the people.


Rev. David L. Perry, of Sharon made the concluding prayer And thus Henry H. Woodbridge was ordained to the work of the Gospel Ministry & installed Bishop of the church of Jesus Christ in North Canaan.

Oct. 27, 1833 Mrs. Phebe Starling received into the fellow- Ship & communion of the church by letter from the church of Christ in Lyme.


Dec. 17 1833 At a church meeting legally called at the meeting house, & having been opened with prayer by the Pastor, any persons present, who wished to unite with the church were requested to signify it. Mr. John Franklin, Mrs. Chloe Huntington & Mary Dunning, offered themselves as candidates . Having been examined as to their experimental acquaintance with religion & assented to the confession of faith, it was P 75 voted that they be propounded on the next Sabbath for admission to the church .


Voted that Br. Sereno B. Gillett be a committee to purchase a blank bound book to be used for keeping the records of the church & also to employ some one to copy into said book the present Records of the church. Voted that Bro. Gillett be authorized to draw of Br. E. Dunning for money sufficient to pay for said book.


Voted to adjourn until Friday next, at 2 o'clock P.M. at the meeting house closed with prayer. H.H. Woodbridge Pastor


Dec. 20 1833 Church met pursuant to adjournment, opened meeting with prayer, four individuals presented themselves as candidates for admission to the church -- Miss Ami Rockwell, Mrs. Joshua Berwick, Mrs. Silas Beckley and Mr. Jacob Hinsdale. They were examined, the confession of Faith of this church read to them, to which they gave their assent. Voted that the four individuals examined be propounded

P 76 Voted that the Pastor of the church & John Emmons Esq. be a committee to prepare a form of a letter of dismission & recommendation to be used by the church & also to prepare a rule relative to the reception of members from other churches, who come recommended by letter.


Voted to receive Miss Melona Rood, who brot a recommendatory letter from the church of Christ in Geneva, N. York as a member of this church.

Dec. 22 1833 At a meeting of the Church held at the house of Ezekiel Daboll & having been opened with prayer by the Pastor, Almon Gillet & his wife & Miss Anna Lawrence offered themselves as candidates for admission to the church, and having been examined, it was voted that they be propounded this afternoon as candidates for admission to the church. Jan. 5 1834 Lord's Day. The following individuals were baptised on a public profession of their assent to & belief in the confession of Faith of this church, to wit -- Almon Gillett & Sarah his wife, Chloe Huntington (wife of Horace Huntington) John Franklin.


The above individuals together with Jacob Hinsdale, Mrs. Lydia Beckley, (wife of Silas Beckley) Mrs. Maria Berwick (wife of Joshua Berwick) Maria Lawrence, Ame Rockwell & Mary Dunning were then received as members of the church of Jesus Christ, having all of them publicly assented to, & expressed their belief in the confession of faith of this church & entered into covenant with us.

P 78 Feb. 28, 1834 At a meeting of the church, regularly convened, & opened with prayer by the pastor, Mrs. Ezekiel Daboll was examined as to her acquaintance with experimental religion, she offering herself as a candidate for admission to the church .


On motion it was voted that the Pastor of the Church together with Sereno B. Gillett & Dea. William Pierce be a committee to prepare for publication the Articles of Faith, the Covenant, the articles of church government & such of the standing rules of the church as they may see fit & report to the church. Adjourned with prayer by the Pastor. H.H. Woodbridge Pastor


April 11, 1834 At a meeting of the church regularly warned & convened & opened with prayer by the Pastor. A letter was laid before the church from the Presbyterian Church in Delhi, Delaware County, N.Y. recommending Maria Louisa R. Woodbridge to the fellowship of the church.


Voted to receive her as a member of this church. The committee to whom was referred the confession of faith of this church to prepare for publication reported the following as the confession of faith, which they recommended the church to adopt.

Voted that the confession of faith presented by the committee & adopted article by article, be adopted as a whole as the confession of the church of Christ Jesus in this place. Voted that the standing rules presented by the committee be adopted as the standing rules of this church.

Voted that the church will print the confession of faith as this day adopted, the covenant & the standing rules. Voted that the Pastor, Dea. Wm. Pierce, & Bro. Sereno B. Gillett be a committee to procure the publication of the same. Voted that said committee have power to draw on the Treasurer for such interest money on the church funds as my be in his hands, after the 1st May next if not hitherto appropriated, to be by the Committee used in printing the confession, covenant & rules.


P 82 June 20, 1834 Miss Maria E. Beckley presented herself as a candidate for admission to the church. After conversation with her the church voted that she be propounded for admission on the next Sabbath . Erastus P. Allen & Alta his wife were at the same time pro- pounded on a letter of recommendation from the church of Christ Jesus in North Goshen.


July 6 Maria E. Beckley (no objection having been made) publickly assented to the confession of Faith of this church & entered into the covenant & was thus received into the full communion of the church.


Erastus P. Allen & wife were announced as members of the church (no objection having been made )


The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was then Administered
