It is difficult to express, without the appearance of extravagance, the satisfac- tion I felt with the methods and work here seen."

DR. ATTICUS G. HAYGOOD: "It is to be questioned whether any single institution under the care of the Methodist Episcopal Church holds a place of impor ance and responsibility equal to that which is possible to the Gammon Theological Seminary. * * * * It may well be questioned whether any single institution in the Southern States could not be better spared."

THE NEW WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY A GRAND INVESTMENT FOR FAMILY OR SCHOOL.

WEBSTER'S INTERNATIONAL DICTIONARY

The Authentic Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, comprising issues of 1864, '79, and '84, (still copyrighted), has been thoroughly revised and enlarged, under the supervision of Noah Porter. D. D., LL. D., of Yale University, and as a distinguishing title, bears the name

WEBSTER'S International Dictionary.

The work of revision occupied over ten years, more than a hundred edi- torial laborers having been employed, and over $300,000 expended before the first copy was printed. Every page has been treated as if the book was now published for the first time.

Critical comparison with any other Dictionary is invited.

Sold by all Booksellers .- Descriptive Pamphlet free on application.

Caution is needed in purchasing a dictionary, as photographic reprints of an obso- lete and comparatively worthless edition of Webster are being marketed under various names and often by misrepresentation.

"The (aligraph" * Writing Machine.

YCALIGRAPHY

"IT . STANDS . AT . THE . HEAD."

Whenever you receive a proposition for a type-writer, kindly bear in mind that the "CALIGRAPH" is the best ALL ROUND machine for the following reasons :

HIGHEST SPEED-(Always ready to prove it in a fair test.) LIGHTEST RUNNING-(No paralysis for our champions.) BEST MANIFOLDING -- (Toronto, August 13, 30 per cent ahead.) LEAST NOISE-(One reason telegraph operators prefer it.) SHORTEST STROKE-(Saving time and labor.) MOST DURABLE-(Only machine guaranteed two years.) STEEL TYPE (No rubber bands or type to give out.) NO UPPER CASE ' SHIFT" (Hard to make two motions as easily as one.)

Easily Learned --- $85.00 --- Popular Price.

The reason we can care for our instruments two years, free of charge, is because the C'aligraph type-bars respond to but one type and wear twice as long as machines "shifting" for upper case, where each bar must respond to two types; (a horse can haul one ton more easily than two tons.)

These facts will help you protect your interests when drummed on the type-writer question, if not already posted, and we trust, when in the market for a writing ma- chine, you will, at least, give us a call. We make no charges whatever for instructing customers fully.

Type-Writer Supplies. Machines Rented. Copying Done. Our instruments attract people by the qualities they display, they retain them by the qualities they possess.

Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1892 by H. G. Saunders, at Washington, D. C., in the office of the Librarian of Congress.

INTRODUCTION

ONSIDERING the large amount of extra work entailed in con- sequence of the complete change in street numbers throughout the city, it is gratifying to me to be able to present this six- teenth volume of the Atlanta City Directory promptly on the first of the year. This book contains 1,363 pages and 32,426 names, repre- senting a general increase in the population of the city of over ten thousand during the past year. The careful census made from house to house during the canvass, shows the present population to be 102,696 of which number 96,891 are located within the city limits, which, to be exact, embraces all the territory lying within a radius of one and three-quarter miles from the Union Passenger Station. There is no other explanation of the very large increase during the last year, except that the whole ten thousand are new-comers, and as the compilation shows that during that time nearly five thousand moved away or died, it really indicates an advent of fifteen thousand. This increase is not confined to any locality, but is general through- out the entire city, and not only do the residence districts show exceptional growth, but there has been a noteworthy increase in fine office and commercial buildings.

The period during which I have published the City Directory here has been one of steady, uninterrupted growth, but in no year has the percentage of increase been so great as in 1891.

As a compendium of valuable-or perhaps it were more correct to say invaluable-information the Atlanta City Directory can scarcely be excelled. It is a complete work of reference and guide to the city. The Street Directory is a feature comparatively new and but few cities possess it. This portion of the work consists of 230 pages, and in addition to showing the new number and name of occupant at each house; shows also-for this year only-the old street number. Following this is the regular alphabetical list, or directory proper, comprising in 861 pages the names of all the adult male residents, with their occupation, place of business, and residence at the new street number. The hundred pages of Business Directory which fol- lows this is specially valuable, for it is an epitome of Commercial, Manufacturing and Professional Atlanta, is particularly complete and reliable, and is that portion of the work to which visiting stran- gers turn for information as to our various industries. The Miscel- laneous Department at the end of the work contains complete lists of churches, schools, societies, a perfect Lodge Directory, circuit court calendar, etc., and much other valuable information to be found only in this work.

I realize that in publishing the Annual Directory here I am and have been, in a measure, identified with the record of Atlanta's growth and progress, and to some extent responsible for an accurate and truthful exhibit in this regard. I have tried to meet this respon- sibility with increasing effort from year to year, and the fact that these efforts are appreciated is evidenced by the very liberal patron- age annually accorded my publication, and it will be my aim to avail myself of every opportunity of improving the work and mak- ing it more popular and more necessary with each succeeding issue.

H. G. SAUNDERS.
