The Atlanta paid Fire Depart- ment was organized July 1, 1882; now has a chief engineer, three assistant chiefs, one fire inspector, eleven foreman, three assistant foreman, one superin- tendent of fire alarm, six engi- neers, one secretary, 116 men, six steamers, nine two-horse hose wagons, three hook and ladder trucks in service, fifty horses, 20,000 feet of hose, and two double-tank two-horse chem- ical engines. The annual ex- pense in connection with the fire department is about $140,000. The force is paid as follows: Chief, $4,000 per year; assistant chiefs, $1,300; captains, $1,200; lieutenants, $1,080 per annum; engineers, $1,080 per annum; hoseman, $60 to $70 per month; drivers, $75 per month; Superin- tendent of fire aları», $1,200 per annum.
