Settled in O'Brien County April 6, 1869, section 36, Grant Township, and has resided on same farm since. Member Iowa Legion of Honor; G. A. R. Post at Suther- land, and M. W. A. Over forty years on his homestead in the county.

Clark Simpson (born at York, Me.). Married Lydia Gault in 1870; children: Charles, J. S. and George W .; after her death he married Ida Bell Rerick, by whom he had children as follows: Lula Bell, Vivian, Lloyd F., Louise, and Idella. Enlisted at Sackett's Harbor, N. Y., 1862, in Company L, Twentieth New York Cavalry. Served as Orderly to one of General Grant's staff; no engagements; eyes injured by fire and smoke at taking of Richmond; discharged at close of war, and settled in this county in 1869. Elected County Superintendent of Schools, this county, and served 1870 to 1872 inclusive; Clerk of Courts, 1871 to 1872 inclusive; County Treasurer 1876 to 1877 inclusive ; later in the banking business at Paullina. On his first settlement in the county he homesteaded south 12 southwest 14 section 20, Grant Town- ship; later resided at Primghar and then Paullina. Died September 29, 1899, at Paullina. Member Swedenborgen Church ; A. F. & A. M., and M. W. A.
Hart, Albert T. Resides at Sheldon, Iowa; born May 25, 1844, Hadley, Mich. Married to wife, Jane E., January 23, 1867 ; children : Arza L., William H., Ada A., Arthur N. and Ross L. Enlisted August 12, 1861, at Albia, Iowa, in Company H, First Iowa Cavalry; battles of Prairie Grove, and others; running fight with Marmaduke April 1863; Capture of Little Rock, and all engagements with General Steele on Red River Expedition ; promoted to Eighth Corporal July 1, 1865; re- enlisted January 4, 1864, and served till his discharge, Febru- ary 15, 1866, at Austin, Texas. Settled in this county at Sheldon, July, 1907.

Ohio Cavalry, Second Brigade, Second Division, Wilson's Cavalry Corps ; was injured severely by horse falling on him. At Lovejoy station when Kilpatrick was surrounded; at charge at Selma, Ala .; discharged August 4, 1865, at Edge- field, Tenn. Settled in O'Brien County, 1885, at Hartley. Died December 7, 1907, at Snohomish, Wash., and there buried. Member Hartley Post, G. A. R .; Christian Church, and I. O. O. F.

Married to Tina Smidt, October 1, 1873 ; children : Alma, Eva, Cornelia, Fred, George W., Viva, Charles, Claude and Clare. Enlisted Feb- ruary 22, 1864, St. Charles, Ill., in Company M, Eighth Illi- nois Cavalry ; served in various skirmishes; discharged July 17, 1865, at Chicago. Settled in this county March, 1888, section 36, Highland Township. Member I. O. O. F.
