Married Lorena Phelps by whom he had children as follows: Phoebe, Robert, Edward, May, Maude, and John; after death of first wife he married his present wife, Emily Graves, April 10, 1901. Enlisted April 9, 1862, at Fort Snelling, Minn., in Company D, Fourth Minnesota Infantry ; served in battles at Farmington, Corinth, etc .; also in detached service in commissary department of Sherman's army ; discharged April 15, 1865, at Washington. Settled in O'Brien County in 1886, on southeast 1/4 section 15, Baker Township, later residing at Primghar.

Formerly resided at Sheldon, where he was a member of Mckenzie Post, G. A. R.


Loder, John. Resides at Jewell, Iowa; born April 22, 1844, at Coshocton County, Ohio, a son of James and Ann Loder. Married his wife, Polly, in fall of 1867; children : William A., Walter J., Alta M., Katie D. Enlisted at Coshocton, Ohio, January 13, 1864, in Company D, Fifty-first Ohio Infantry, Second Brigade, First Division, Fourth Corps; served in battles Buzzard's Roost, Resaca, Lost Mountain, Atlanta, and Jonesboro, Ga .; discharged May 24, 1865. Settled in O'Brien County, 1871, residing in Grant Township, six miles east of present site of Primghar. He was a member and deacon in the Congregational Church presided over by Rev. Mr. Covey on section 6, Grant Township.

Kilpatrick ; later transferred to Company C, Sixty-fifth Illi- nois Infantry; served in skirmishes at Atlanta and Aiken, S. C .; surrounded at both places but escaped; went around the Rebel army under Hood at Atlanta with Kilpatrick and cut their communications; discharged July 13, 1865, at Greensboro, N. C. Settled in O'Brien County August 21, 1889, in Center Township, later residing at Primghar. Mem- ber of S. F. Jordan Post No. 417, G. A. R., at Primghar. Had a brother in same company and father and brother-in- law were in War of 1812.


Marshall, L. D. Born in 1844 in Louisa County, Iowa. Enlisted July 1, 1862, at Council Bluffs, in Company E, Twenty-third Iowa Infantry; transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps Feb- ruary 16, 1864; discharged July 6, 1865, at Wilmington, Del. Member of Mckenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., at Sheldon.


Marston, James. Resides at Sheldon, Iowa; born in 1837, in Maine; parents, S. R. and Arind Marston (born in Maine). Married wife, Margaret, 1865; children: Frankie and Eu- gene. Enlisted May 17, 1864, at Boscobel, Wis., Company E, Forty-first Wisconsin Infantry; discharged September 23, 1864, at Milwaukee. Settled in county in 1872.


Martin, James P. Resides at Sutherland, Iowa; born November 10, 1847, in Aberdeen, Scotland; father, William (born De- cember 25, 1796), and mother, Mary Lumsden (born July 16, 1792), both being born at Aberdeen. Married Mary Brady August 30, 1870; children : Fred L., William R., Olive F., Clyde A., Mary A., Elsie L., James B. and Lora B. Enlisted September 22, 1864, in Company H, First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery, Twenty-second Army Corps, Eastern Division; suffers from deafness incurred in service; discharged June 26, 1865, at Fort Lyon, Va. Settled in O'Brien County No- vember 16, 1887, in Waterman Township. Member Masonic Lodge; Yeoman; Homestead; E. O. C. Ord Post, G. A. R.

Had four brothers in the army: William, in Company E, Thirtieth Wisconsin Infantry; Samuel, in same company ; John C., in Battery H, First Wisconsin Artillery ; George F., in first call for troops. Samuel died in service.


Martin, Robert. Born January 12, 1844, a son of Joseph and Jane Mitchell Martin. Married Mary B. Allison November 15, 1870. Scott A. is the only child. Enlisted June 16, 1863, at Pittsburg, Pa., Company H, Fifth Pennsylvania Artillery ; ap- pointed Corporal September 3, 1864, when he re-enlisted ; dis- charged June 30, 1865, at Vienna, Va. Settled in O'Brien County March, 1882, at Sheldon. Died February 24, 1905, at Sheldon. Member Mckenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., and K. of P., Sheldon.


Mason, James B. Resides at 6555 Minerva Avenue, Chicago; born July 15, 1842, in Lake County, Illinois; father, Matthias (born in Franklin County, Illinois) ; mother, Maria Rice (born in Brattleboro, Vermont). Married to Maria Wilcox March 22, 1865; children: Fred, Susan, Everett, John, Charlie, Roy, Bernice, Stella, Gladys. Enlisted August 19, 1861, Company F, Thirty-seventh Illinois Infantry ; saw ser- vice in battles of Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, Chalk Bluffs, Siege of Vicksburg, Sugar Creek, Springfield, Newton, Neo- sha, King's River, Van Buren and others; discharged Sep- tember 29, 1864, at Chicago. Settled in O'Brien County April, 1881, in Liberty Township. Member of Masonic bod- ies, including Knights Templar.
