Des Moines is central and capital of that part of the Louisiana purchase comprised between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers and the parallels of 40° 35' and 43º 130'. The aborigines named it Iowa, or " Beautiful Prairie." "The surface is gently undulating, the stiteams are numerous and the waters sweet. The acreage is nearly 40,000,000, of which ninety five per cent is tillable, deep, dark, fat soil. The elevation is eight bun- dred to fifteen hundred feet above sea level. Natural drainage is good and the climate is exceptionally healthful. No diseases are prevalent. The death rate is very low.
Iowa has various valuable ores, building stones, lime, clays, white sand, gypsum, coal, etc. In the gypsum product Iowa stands third among the states, and only fifth as to coal mined. About 20,000 square miles are underlaid with coal of excellent quality, and over one-tenth of the state is covered with timber of various sorts.

THE UNION.
The Union is a practical system of co-operative savings, organized in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 6, Title IX, of the Code of Iowa. i
Shares $100 at maturity; monthly dues on all classes of installment stock are fifty- eight cents per share. No admission fee is charged, but subscribers must pay at least one month's dues with the application.
The Union differs from a savings bank in the following particulars :
1. Every depositor owns stock.
2. : Loans only to the shareholders. .
3. Every stockholder has one vote for each share he holds in choosing annually from the shareholders the Directors of the Association.
Shareholders are credited with the entire payments as made each month or other- Tise, and the total profits are divided in June and December every year.
The dividends are appoftioned upon the gross payments in ratio of amount and time. a Issues three forms of installment stock, and three forms of prepaid stock.
