President's Report.

Dear Brethren :- Through the mercy of our Heavenly Father, our lives have been spared for another year, that we might come together to deliberate and plan for the advancement of His kingdom on earth. We come together in troublous times-times when men have but little thought or interest for the things of the kingdom, since the conditions of financial stringency and political unrest are the one thought of every mind and

the theme of every tongue. The great pocket-nerve of this keen, money- loving nation has been given a wrench and great is the outcry.

But the disquiet of the American people does not end in outcry. "The children of the world are in their generation wiser than the children of light," and all who feel that their interests are at stake, are at work, giving their time, their best efforts and their money unsparingly, that public opinion may be influenced as they would have it.

Is their no lesson for us, ministers of the Word and laymen of the Church, stewards all of us of the riches of the Gospel of Christ? Do we urge our hol, cause at all times and in all places with forethought and skill and blood-earnestness, using other means, as the mighty agency of the Press, where the spoken words fail to reach? Let us, brethren, take to heart the stirring lesson of the times, be up and doing, and, like the great Missionary Apostle, become all things to all men, that by any means we might save some.

As a summary of our year's work as a Synod, I have gathered the following items:

Just about a month after our session at Goshen, three of us met again as your delegates at the session of the General Council at Easton, Pa. Although several nationalities and diverse synodical interests were represented at the convention, its sessions were marked by a spirit of true brotherly harmony and by great zeal as well. Three of the steps taken especially invite our attention. These are: the formation of a Board of Publication for the diffusion of our Church's literature among her people, and, closely connected with this step, the establishment of a General Council Church Paper. The last step, having to do with the revision or nationalizing of the Home Mission work, that is the very life and growth of the Church, cannot be overestimated in its importance.

The following may be given as the official acts of the year:

ORDINATION.

Mr. Isaiah Whitman was ordained on the evening of June 11th. This act was performed by the Synod of the Northwest: but I assisted as your representative and Rev. Whitman was at once dismissed to us.

INSTALLATIONS.

December 15th, 1895, I installed Rev. F. C. Oberly, at Decatur, III. May 21st, Rev. M. L. Wagner was installed at Vandalia, Ill., by Rev. Oberly. June 28, Rev. D. L. Reese was installed at Frankfort, Ind., by Rev. Dr. M. J. Stirewalt. Next Sunday (Sept. 28th) the installation services of Rev. H. L. McMurray, at the Humboldt Park Lutheren Church, will take place, and in these our Synod is to be represented.

DEDICATIONS.

On May 17th, a substantial frame church, costing $1,500 was dedicated by Rev. J. M. G. Sappenfield in the presence of a large audience, Rev. M.

1

-8-

L. Wagner preaching the dedication sermon. On Whitsunday, St. James' Church, of Vandalia, Ill., a handsome brick structure, costing, when fur- nished, over $9,000, was dedicated. Rev. C. Koerner preached the dedi- cation sermon, and the pastor, Rev. M. L. Wagner, performed the act of consecration. In the near future a third dedication is looked for, that of St. John's of Chicago.

RESIGNATIONS AND DISMISSALS.

Shortly after the adjournment of Synod, Rev. J F. Booher was given a letter of dismissal on the grounds that he was serving a congregation of another synod. Rev. J. A. Leas, our efficient Secretary, having removed to Red Wing, Minn., was on May 19th, given his dismissal to the Synod of the Northwest. The vacancy left by Rev. Leas at Goshen has been filled by the election of the Rev. William Evans. A letter dated Aug. 27th, informed me that Rev. A. V. House had resigned the Germantown charge, to take effect October 18th, 1896.

ACCESSIONS.

Over against these few losses, 1 have the pleasure to report appli- cations for membership from two flourishing young congregations in this city and an accession in men that stands unequaled in the history of the Synod, and that marks the beginning of a day of larger things.

OFFICIAL VISITS.

During the year, I visited Frankfort and Goshen on the business of Synod and attended the Sessions of the Northwest Synod at Red Wing, Minn., besides conducting an extensive correspondence. 1

JUBILEE.

This year is noteworthy as being the Jubilee year, marking the com- pletion of twenty-five years of the Synod's life and activity. Our His- torical Committee will doubtless furnish us with abundant material, set- ting forth the labors and hardships of the early days, to stimulate our missionary spirit, as the spirit of the Church has been stirred by the re- cital of the pioneer labors of the fathers of the Pittsburgh Synod. As regards the efforts of the Financial Jubilee Committee, the times and geographical difficulties must be taken into account. Your President, Secretary and Treasurer gave some thought to this matter, preparing a letter of exhortation and suggestion that was sent to the pastors for distribution. Later, I wrote the brethren, suggesting a Harvest Home festival. Let us hope that the richest blessing of the Lord of the Harvest may go with this effort, and that seed may be sown that shall yet bear fruit many fold for the kingdom.

RECOMMENDATIONS.

I have but one recommendation to make, and yet that one is of the greatest importance, having to do with the development of our educational

-

forces and possibilities, First of all, I would direct your attention to the words of our last President's Report concerning the Theological Seminary here in the metropolis of the West, that in the workings of Providence has grown within half a decade to such proportions.

But something more than this is needed. The students who gather in the lecture rooms of our Seminary come from many states and synods and, for the most part, they return to their old associations, as it is fitting that they should. Men from our own field are needed to develop our own resources, not only to supply the ranks of the ministry, but likewise to become intelligent and zealous leaders in the Master's work in the ranks of the laity. We thank God for the men we have, clerical and lay, to labor in this part of the vineyard of the Lord; but how many more might we not have, were there institutions provided in which an educa- tion could be gained and church love fostered. The denominations about us have such institutions that I might name, and they are reaping the benefit in social and religious leadership throughout the states in which we as a Synod have a footing.

Permit me most earnestly to recommend to all here gathered, the careful perusal of the January number of "THE LUTHERAN CHURCH REVIEW," and in particular the trenchant article of President Kunzman of the Pitts- burgh Synod on "The Hinderance to Our Church's Growth in the United States." With our sense of stewardship quickened by such discussions, we cannot but see that we have the resources lying undeveloped about us. We have the youth; but how scattered and in what danger of being lost to us as a church!

Practical possibilities in this matter have been shown to exist, let us give them our patient and careful attention in the hope that in our Heavenly Father's good time, tho' it may not be this year or next, sub- stantial results may come from them to the advancement of His kingdom here upon earth and to the glory of His name.

Respectfully submitted,

WILLIAM A. SADTLER.

The report was received and referred to a special com- mittee consisting of Revs. Wesner, Oberly and Wagenhals and delegates Miller and Fritch.

Election of Officers.

Was next entered upon. Delegates Myers and Killian were appointed tellers.
