After a two years' course at Columbus, he was licensed to preach by the Western District Synod of the Joint Synod of Ohio, June 13, 1843. He remained a licentiate of this synod until June 2, 1847, when he was ordained to the gospel ministry.

His first parish was in Butler county, Ohio, consisting of two congregations. It was soon enlarged to nine congregations and four preaching points. These congregations and preaching points were in Butler, Darke, Miami, Champaign and Shelby counties, Ohio. To supply them it was frequently necessary to preach four times a Sunday in as many different places.

In the spring of 1859 he moved to East Germantown, Ind., and

-33-

took charge of that parish, consisting of three congregations. In addition to this he served three congregations in Blackford county, about fifty miles from East Germantown. During this time he also served the two congregations in the Mulberry parish, 130 miles from his home.

In 1869 he resigned the East Germantown parish and accepted a call to Colburn, Ind. While residing here he supplied the Mul- berry parish for a time, also the Rochester parish, and four con- gregations in Pulaski county.

In 1874 he accepted a call to Versailles, O. Four years later he resigned and moved to Vandalia, expecting to take a much needed rest. But in less than a year he was constrained to take charge of the Claremont parish, where he labored faithfully until 1895, when declining years and failing health compelled him to relinquish his work. In this field he ended his days in Christ and in peace, March 1, 1897. The funeral service was held in the church in which he had spent the last fifteen years of his activity. His successor, Rev. J. M. G. Sappenfield, conducted the opening services. The undersigned preached the sermon. Rev. Sappen- field in a few words also bore testimony to the estimable character of the departed. His remains were laid by in the East German- town Cemetery, to await the glorious resurrection in Christ Jesus. The days of his pilgrimage were 77 years, 11 months and 22 days.

His private record shows that he preached 5,050 sermons, baptized 1000 persons, confirmed 525, solemnized 200 marriages, burried 425 persons, and traveled in the discharge of his pastoral duties 20,000 ıniles.

His wife was Catharine Shafer, who, with five children, sur- vives him.

He was one of the founders of this Synod, and, with the ex- ception of four years, while in Versailles, O., he remained a member thereof until his death. As a preacher he was deliberate in his utterance, but earnest and forcible. He spoke out of the fullness of his heart, and with a conviction of its truth. In dis- position he was kind, gentle and sympathetic, winning the confi- dence and love of his parishioners. He was patient under trials and sufferings, uncomplaining under hardships and privations, and cheerful under reverses of fortune. His expressed desire in his old days was "That he might die in the harness."

President's Report.

FATHERS AND BRETHREN :- By the kind permission of a loving Providence, we are again assembled in Synodical session. As we look behind and about us we can say perhaps with more truth than when it was written,

"We are living, we are dwelling, In a grand and awful time. In an age on ages telling, To be living is sublime."

Since last we met, one of the most wonderful wars of history has been declared, waged and finished. The God of Battles has been with us, and we are grateful for the return of peace.

War is always demoralizing. Our churches have felt the evil influence of its presence. The distractions, divisions and excite- ments that it brings into the community and the home are not con- ducive to growth in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Neither is this influence at an end when peace is declared. Many grave and untried problems must now be solved by our gov- ernment. We need the wisest statesmanship and the most sober patriotism for the work before us. The State, now more than ever, needs the prayers and the influence of the church. We may also expect further and increasing godlessness with the breaking up of our armies. Now, more than ever, we need instruction, con- viction and consecration. Only a church that knows what she believes and why she believes, whose ministerial and lay-mem- bers have experienced the power, the preciousness and the peace that come from such a faith can expect to live and grow and over- come in these times.

Your President's first year of service has been a laborious one. The correspondence, counsel and visitation have required much time, anxiety and care. During the year there have been the following

Resignations.

Rev. William Evans resigned the pastorate of the First Eng- lish Lutheran Church of Goshen, Ind., April 1, 1898.

Rev. H. L. McMurray resigned as Pastor of St. Paul's Eng- lish Lutheran Church, Chicago, September 1, 1898, and was dis- missed to the Pittsburgh Synod.

On September 6, the Rev. Dr. M. J. Stirewalt resigned the East Germantown Charge, on account of his sudden and sore affliction.

September 11, Rev. Frank C. Oberly informed me that he had resigned the First English Lutheran Church of Decatur, Illinois. The resignation will go into effect October 17.

Ordinations.

On Thursday evening, April 28, 1898, the Rev. George P. Kabele and the Rev. Loran O. Pearch were ordained to the office of the Holy Ministry, after having been examined and recommend- ed by the Synod's committee on examination. The service was held in Wicker Park Church, Chicago, Il1. Rev. H. L. McMur- ray preached the sermon, the clerical officers of Synod, assisted by the other brethren present, performed the act of ordination.
