University of St. Mary's of the Lake .- - Situated on Wolcott street, corner of Superior. The University of St. Mary's of the Lake was founded in the year 1843 by the Right Rev- erend Bishop Quarters, Bishop of Chicago, and then incorporated. The first President was Rev. J. A. Kinsella. The University was afterwards in the possession of the members of the Order of the Holy Cross, and declined somewhat in their hands. The present President, Dr. MeMallen, assumed the directorate in September, 1861, and since then the institution has bren continu- ally increasing in attendance of students and influence. The present buildings are now filled to overflowing with students, of whom one hundred and eighty-six are in regular

Chicago City Dispensary .- Lind's Block Mar- ket, between Lake and Randolph streets. For the gratuitous treatment of indigent pa- tient4, is in immediate connection with the Medieal Department of Lind University, and is attended by Professors Audrews, Byford and Wardner.
Charity Dispensary .- At "Rush Medieal Col- lege." This is a pub'ie institution for the gratuitous treatment of the sick poor. Pa- tients are prescribed for withont charge, and when unable to come to tlu, Dispensary are visited at their homes. It is open every day from 3 to 4 p. M., at Ru-h Medical College, southeast corner Drarborn and Indiana streets, attended by the Faculty of Rush Medical College, daily.
Hahnemann College Dispensary .- 168 S. Clark street. Chartered in 1855. Open for the Medical and Surgical treatment of the sick poor of the city, each day, except Sundays, throughout the year. Hospitals.
Chicago City Hospital,-Is now occupied by the U. S. authorities as a Military Ilospital. Mercy Hospital. Under the direction of the Sisters of Mercy ; 265 Wabash avenue. United States Marine Hospital. This is a char- itable institution, under the auspices of the general government, situated near the river and the lake, on the ground formerly oecu- piedas a military post, for the treatment of sick marines alone. It is supported by the Hospital Fund, of the United States, derived frem the wages of all American sailors. The building stands on the east side of Mich- igan avenue, between the river and South Water street, and is 90 feet 6 inches front, by 128 feet 6 inches deep, three stories high above the basement, with a cupola elevated to 67 feet. Its appearance is fine, with spacious piazzas on the north and south sides, and the manner of construction is permanent. The basement is of stone, and its other walls white pressed brick. It con- tains forty- eight apartments besides spacious halls, water closets, bath rooms, etc., and will accommodate three hundred and fifty patients. It was first opened for the treat- ment of patients in April, 1862, and at present the number of patients treated is over seven hundred yearly. The offi- cers of this institution are : Ralph N.
