The Seventy-third Regiment, Illinois, was or- ganized and mustered into service at Camp But- ยท ler, August 21, 1862, under command of Col. James F. Jaquess, a former well-known minlster of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and for sev- eral years President of the Illinois Woman's College at Jacksonville, at the time of his en- llstment being in charge of a seminary at Quincy. The regiment was made up mostly of enlistments from Adams, Champaign, Christian, Hancock, Jackson, Logan, Piatt, Pike, Sangamon, Taze- well and Vermilion Counties, and saw its first service in Kentucky ; later took part in campaigns in Western Tennessee, Northern Mississippi and Georgia, participating during its period of ser- vice in the Battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kene- saw Mouutaln, Peach Tree Creek, Franklin, Nashville and other notable engagements, and established for Itself a record second to no other from Illinois. Originally consisting of about 900 men, its total loss by death during its period of service amounted to 215, of which 97 resulted from wounds recelved in battles, while 16 died in rebel prisons. The regiment was mustered out at Nashville, Tenn., June 15, 1865. ONE HUNDRED FOURTEENTH INFANTRY.

The One Hundred and Fourteenth Iiiinois Voi- uuteer Infantry was organized during the months of July and August, 1862, and was mustered in for three years' service at Camp Butier, Septem- ber 18th foilowing. It was recruited entirely from Centrai Illinois, six companies-B, C, E, G, H and I-being made up from Sangamon County, Companies A and D from Cass County and F and K from Menard. It wili thus be seen that there was no other regiment, during the whole of the Civil War, to which this county was as liberai a contributor, its representatives consist- ing iargeiy of the sturdy agricultural and other industriai classes. Its first Coionel was James W. Judy, of Taliuia, Menard County, who was succeeded in Angust, 1863, by Coi. John F. King, of Sangamon, and later by Samuel N. Shoup, also of Sangamon, in December, 1864.

The regiment rendered its first service on picket duty at Memphis, Tenn., but iater took part in the Taliahatchie (Miss.) campaign in December, 1862, and after skirmishing with the rebel Gen. Forrest in the vicinity of Jackson, Tenn. for some weeks, in March foliowing pro- ceeded down the river from Memphis to Young's Point, La., where it was assigned to the First Brigade, First Division, Fifteenth Army Corps, under command of Gen. W. T. Sherman, and soon after engaged in the Vicksburg campaign, par- ticipating in the battle at Jackson, Miss. One of the most memorable struggles in which it was engaged was the disastrous fight under Gen. Sturgis, at Guntown, Miss., in June, 1864, in which, of a total of 397 men engaged in that affair, it suffered a loss of 205 (more than one- half) in kilied, wounded and missing. The iatter months of 1864 were spent chiefly in campaign- ing in Western Tennessee and Northern Miss- issippi, taking part in the Battie of Nashviiie and the pursuit of Hood, and later it saw ser- vice in Louisiana, proceeding in February, 1865, from New Orleans to Mobile Bay and partici- pating in the siege of Spanish Fort and capture of Mobile, this event occurring about the time of the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. After nearly three months spent on guard duty at Montgomery and other points in Central Ala- bama, the regiment was ordered to Vicksburg and there mustered out August 3, 1865, receiv- ing finai pay and discharge at Camp Butier, August 15th.
