THIRD CAVALRY.
The Third Regiment Illinols Cavalry was or- ganized and mustered in at Camp Butler in August, 1861, under command of Col. Eugene A. Carr, of the Regular Army, and saw Its first service in Missouri, successively under command of Generals Hunter and Sigel, then joined in the campaign of Gen. Curtis toward the South- west, and took part in the battle near Spring- field, Mo., February 13th, and later pursued Price's retreating army in Arkansas, capturing a number of prisoners. Other important engage- ments in which it participated included the Battles of Pea Ridge, Halnes Bluff, Arkansas Post, Port Gibson, Champion Hiils and slege of Vicksburg. In July, 1864, a portion of the regiment re-enlisted as veterans, was later con- solidated in six companies, took part after the close of the rebellion in service against the In- dians In the Northwest, and was mustered out at Springfield, October 18, 1865:

TENTH CAVALRY.
The Tenth Iiiinois Cavairy was organized at Camp Butier in September, 1861, and was mus. tered in for three years' serviee November 25th under command of James A Barrett, as its first Colonei. Barrett was succeeded a iittie more than four mouths iater by Coi. Dudley Wlekers- ham, the first Lieutenant Colonel and a eitizen of Springfield, who remained in command two years, when he was succeeded by Lieut. Coi. James Stuart, who served ont the unexpired term. There was a iarge representation in this regiment from Springfieid and Sangamon County, inciuding, as Chaplain, Rev. Franeis Springer, for several years at the head of Illinois State University at Springfield, now known as Con- cordia Seminary.
The regiment was first mounted on horses beionging to the individual members, which con- tinued untii 1864, when horses were furnished by the Government. In January, 1862, it marched to Quiney, Iii., some two months later went to Benton Barracks, and next to Roiia and Spring- fieid, Mo., where the First Battalion joined Gen. Curtis in his campaigns in Arkansas. The re- mainder of the regiment continued In active service in Southern Missouri, iater extending its inovements as a part of the Army of the Fron- tier, with Col. Wiekersham in command of a Cavalry Brigade, partleipating in the most active operations in Arkansas, including the eapture of Arkansas Post and Little Rock. In February, 1864, it returned on furiough to Springfield, Ill., later a part of the reglment re-enllsted as vet- erans and, after seeing further serviee at Nash- vilie, Tenn., and in Arkansas, this branch of the regiment on January 27, 1865, with recruits, was consolidated into nine companies, with three companies for the Fifteenth Cavalry, making the "Tenth Iliinois Veteran Volunteer Cavairy." After the assassination of President Lincoln, Aprii 14, 1865, it was ordered to New Orleans on police duty, and during the last few months . of its service was on duty on Red River and in the vieinity of San Antonio, Texas, where it was mustered out November 23, 1865, reaching Springfield, January 1, 1866, and receiving finai pay and discharge, January 6th.
