ONE HUNDRED THIRTIETH INFANTRY.


The One Hundred Thirtieth Regiment was mustered into service for three years, at Camp Butler, October 25, 1862, under command of Col. Nathaniel Nlles, of Believille, Ili., with James H. Matheny, of Springfield, as Lleutenant Col- onel and William Prescott as Major, with a large representation in Companies A and I from Sangamon County. It was first assigned to pro- vost duty at Memphis, Tenn., but at the request of Col. Niles was reileved and sent to active service In the field, meeting Its first engagement with the enemy at Port Gibson and, later, par- ticipating in the Vicksburg campaign until the surrender of that stronghold. It later took part in the battle at Jackson, Miss., and after spend- ing some time on guard duty at Vicksburg, was sent to New Orleans and rendered service at varlous points in Louisiana, Lieut. Col. James H. Matheny, in the meantime assuming command on the resignation of Col. Nlles. In January, 1865, it was consolidated with the Seventy- seventh Iiilnois, participated in the siege and capture of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, which resulted in the surrender of Mobile, then was engaged for a time on patrol duty up the Tom- bigbee River, and was finally mustered out at New Orleans August 15, 1865, receiving final pay and discharge at Springfield, August 31st :

The One Hundred and Thirty-third Volunteer Infantry was mustered in at Camp Butler, May 31, 1864, for one hundred days' service, and on June 3d was sent to the Barracks at Rock Island, where it was assigned to duty guarding Con- federate prisoners of war. It performed its duties faithfully and efficiently, and its term of service having expired, was mustered out at Camp Butler, September 24, 1864.

FIRST ILLINOIS CAVALRY. (THREE YEARS' SERVICE.)


The First Regiment Iliinois Cavairy-consist- ing of seven companies-was organized at Alton, and mustered into service, July 3, 1861, soon after went to Missouri assigned to command under Gen, Grant, and in September took part in the Battie of Lexington in connection with Col. Muliigan, in which the Union forces were out- numbered and forced to surrender. After spend- ing several weeks on parole at Benton Barracks, the regiment was reorganized and, for a time, was engaged in guarding supply trains in Mis- souri, but on July 14, 1862, was finally mustered out of service, many of its members later en- listing in other regiments. Company F of this regiment was largely made up from Sangamon County :

SECOND CAVALRY.


The Second Iilinois Cavalry was mustered in- to service at Camp Butler, August 12, 1861, saw its most active service in Western Tennessee, Missississippi and Louisiana, also taking part in the capture of Fort Blakely and Mobile in the last days of the war; in January, 1864, a part of the regiment re-enlisted as veterans, and a few months later was consolidated into six com- panies under command of the late Benjamin F. Marsh, its final muster out taking place at San Antonio, Texas, November 24, 1865.
