The paper was distributed on the second Sunday of each month, an edition of 1200 copies, and distributed free. For a number of years the members have been required to pay subscription. At the present time it is mailed free to all the members of the congregation, and the publi- cation is paid for by offerings, advertisements and the balance from the church treasury.

Its contents have always been of such a character that have been suit- able for a Christian young people's society and we feel confident that it has performed a good mission.

For a number of years and at the present time, both English and Swedish are used in its columns. In its present form and contents it may be classed as a Parish Paper.

Willing Workers' Society

The Willing Workers' Society was organized January 27th, 1888, in the home of Esther Lindeblad, who is now Mrs. Bergstrom, of La- Grange, Ill. The following officers were elected: President, Miss Hilma Josephson, now Mrs. Rev. Hultkrans of St. Paul, Minnesota ; secretary, Miss Emily Stromberg, now Mrs. C. G. Anderson of Mo- line, Illinois ; treasurer, Miss Hilma Lind, now deceased.

The society at present has a membership of twenty girls, ranging in age from five to thirteen years. The meetings are held the first Satur- day afternoon of the month and the membership fee is ten cents. A program is carried out and some times the girls sew and make articles for sale.

They work mainly for the church, and the following articles have been bought and given by them to the church: The electric light fix- tures under the gallery of the auditorium, the clock in the dining-room of the basement, the baptismal font, the two brass seven-armed can- delabras for the altar, the antependium with the emblem I.H.S., the ·"open Bible emblem" placed on the front of the pulpit, besides contri- buting forty and fifty dollars to the church treasury several times.

The following persons have served as leaders of this organization : Hilma Josephson-Hultkrans, Emily Stromberg-Anderson, Anna To- line-Martinson, Marie Ede-Erickson, Nellie Rosenquist-Forsberg, Han- nah Johnson-Fors, Elsie Astrom, Esther Bohman-Freeman, Florence Carlson-Wiegren, Hilma Toline-Nelson and Hanna M. The Loyal Helpers' Mission Class

The Loyal Helpers' Mission Class was organized in October, 1919. It consisted of the 1919 Confirmation Class, both boys and girls. Miss Hildur Herrstrum and Miss Gertrude Johnson were the teachers for the Confirmation Class in the Sunday-school at that time, so they be- came the leaders for the first years. Our object was to work for mis- sions.

We decided at the organization meeting to meet once a month. At these meetings we have had regular programs, taken partly from the Mission Tidings, and partly from other sources. We have also had several purely social gatherings aside from the regular meetings.

After a while the boys dropped out and we bacame a girls' mission class. We then took up work along different lines. In order to raise money we have given pageants, held fancy-work, apron and candy sales. We have sent money to the Seamen and Loggers' Mission, Bethphage, Rev. Thure Holmer in India, Christmas Cheer Fund and to the Jew- ish Mission. We have also made bandages and sent to Africa. We have given Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets. Our money now goes through the regular channels of the Woman's Home and Foreign Mis- sionary Society.

The Lord has richly blessed all our little efforts, and we hope by His grace and guidance to do still greater things for His kingdom.

GERTRUDE C. JOHNSON, Leader.

The Junior Sorosis Society

The Junior Sorosis was organized February 27, 1923, with sixteen girls as charter members and with Miss Ruth Nelson as leader. The society decided to meet the third Monday evening of each month and devote its efforts to the welfare of the church and charitable institutions. During its two years of existence it has become known as a very active group. Several interesting and successful entertainments have been sponsored. Every Christmas the society sends a large box of gifts to the Children's Home at Andover, Illinois, which is very much appre- ciated. At Thanksgiving time baskets are filled with good things and distributed among the needy. The meetings of the society have been very well attended. The present membership is 28. E. H.

Junior Lutheran Brotherhood

This society was organized May 18th, 1925, when a group of young men of our church met and decided there was a need for such an or- ganization. A committee was appointed to draw up a constitution to present at the next meeting. On June Ist the constitution was offi- cially adopted. There are twenty-five members at the present time, with good prospects of fifty before the organization is a year old. These young men are interested in three-fold growth: spiritual, mental and physical. Not a single one of these essentials should be neglected. The meetings are held the first Monday of each month and opened with Scripture reading and prayer. The big purpose is to keep the young men together and close to the church. A study will be made of Rob- ert's Rules of Order to acquaint the members more fully with the proper way to conduct a business meeting. They are also interested in athletics and will encourage the boys to play on the Sunday-school bas- ketball teams and engage in other athletic activity. The welfare of our church is paramount with these young men. With the help of God they hope to serve the good old First Lutheran Church. C. W. F.

The Junior Mission Band

In 1921 the Misses Gertrude and Anna Johnson were elected by the Sunday-school teachers to see if they could organize our Sunday-school into a Junior Mission Band. During 1921-1922 the band was organ- ized and in 1923 our Sunday-school became a 100% Junior Mission Band.

During its existence the Band has given several programs, some of these having been held in connection with the opening of the Thank- offering boxes. Quite a little sum has been gathered through these Thank-offering boxes. The Juniors and the Loyal Helpers gave the pageant, "All the World for Christ," at one time.

May the good Lord richly bless our Juniors and the gifts which they are gathering for His kingdom.

Organ Society

This society was organized October 10, 1876, with 74 members. C. Wallin was elected chairman, A. G. Anderson secretary, and J. As- trom treasurer. The membership dues were 50 cents per month for men and 25 cents for women.

The organ was purchased from the Moline Pipe Organ Co. at the cost of $2,700. It had 22 stops and two manuals.

PIPE ORGAN, DEDICATED 1881.

I26

When the church was struck by lightning on the 8th of July, 1884, the organ was wrecked and had to be repaired at a cost of $1,300. It was covered by insurance. One stop, the clarinet, was donated by the organ firm when the organ was repaired.

The pipe organ was dedicated Dec. 16, 1881, when a fine musical program was rendered. C. H. Wood of Chicago played, assisted by J. F. Ring as director of the choir. The dedication address was given by Dr. T. N. Hasselquist, and prayer was offered by the Reverends Erland Carlsson and Prof. O. Olsson. At this festival $107 was raised. The Organ Society had previously gathered $2,800. The cost of the organ being $2,700, the organ society donated $100 toward the fund for the purchase of a church bell. In 1893 when the question of mov- ing the organ forward to the chancel of the church was considered, it was unanimously decided by young and old "that the organ shall stand where it stands."

Melodeon

The first musical instrument used at the services of the congregation was a little melodeon which was played by Mrs. O. C. T. Andrén. Among the rules adopted for the sexton in 1858, we find the following, "that he shall carry the melodeon carefully before the services from the parsonage to the church and back again after the service." In 1866 it was decided "that the musical instrument be moved to the rear of the church." The melodeon was purchased by Mr. Andrew Lind who

127

donated it to the Augustana College Museum, where it will no doubt remain free from further decisions of church meetings.

Small Pipe Organ

Such an instrument was purchased by the organ builder, Mr. C. M. Lindvall, which was later donated to the congregation in Pullman, Ill., in 1894.

The New Pipe Organ

For a number of years the congregation had considered the advisa- bility of installing a new pipe organ. At the annual meeting of the church, held January, 1917, it was agreed that a committee be selected by Rev. A. F. Bergstrom, whose duty should be to prepare plans and procure prices and make recommendations for the suggested changes and a new pipe organ. It was also agreed that the committee should consist of three members from the church council, three members from the board of trustees and two members from each church society. This committee consisted of the following: Rev. A. F. Bergstrom, chairman ; Oscar Brissman, Chas. Johnson, Carl Peterson, deacons; F. F. Free- man, Oscar Eckerman, Martin Anderson, trustees; Geo. W. Johnson, S. H. Forsberg, John Godehn, Men's Society; Mrs. Chas. Goodman- son, Mrs. Gust Carlson, Mission Society; Mrs. Gust Holm, Mrs. Elmer Olson, Ladies' Aid Society; Mrs. John Haglund, Mrs. John Johnson, East End Society; Miss Hanna Nordgren, Miss Alice Carl- son, Sorosis Society; Mrs. Geo. W. Johnson, Mrs. F. W. Shallene, Mrs. Geo. Landee, Veronica Society ; Carl Faust, Oliver Olson, Wm. Axelson, Young People's Society; Miss Hannah Wahlberg, Miss Hilma Toline, Willing Workers; Miss Wilhelmina Wistrand, choir.

This committee met during the summer of 1917 and organized with Rev. A. F. Bergstrom chairman, John Godehn vice chairman; O. A. Eckerman secretary, Henry Forsberg treasurer.

On motion made, seconded and carried, at the annual meeting Janu- ary 8th 1918, this committee was authorized to proceed with the pro- posed outline of expenditures, provided $8,000 could be subscribed for an organ fund. The committee immediately set to work and within a few months procured pledges amounting to approximately $8,000. The work of remodeling and the purchasing of the new organ was then be- gun. A contract for the new organ was signed May 10th, 1918. It was dedicated by Professor F. J. Frysinger of Augustana College, Sat-
